Krieghoff Equals Career Goals Record as Cal Poly Ties for First Place
Abutin Also One Assist Away from Matching Single-Season School Record
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team scored twice in the final 25 minutes Sunday afternoon to edge UC Riverside 3-2 in dramatic fashion, putting the finishing touches on a third consecutive Big West win that saw the conference's two leading scorers make school history all while lifting the Mustangs toward the top of the league table.
Cal Poly — now with 12 points — moved into a tie with CSUN atop the standings, although the Matadors (4-0-0, 7-7-1) host Cal State Fullerton at 6 tonight. (The top four qualify for the Big West Tournament, which Cal Poly will host Nov. 6 and 9 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.)
The Mustangs (4-2-0, 9-8-0) went up 1-0 in the 27th minute when Megan Abutin passed over to the left side to Elise Krieghoff, who headed a ball down to Sara Lancaster for a shot from five yards out.
UCR (2-3-1, 7-6-3) equalized in the next minute, though, when Tyler Cunningham crossed in from the right corner to set up Celina Valencia. The Highlanders then took the lead three minutes before halftime, as Amber Marani converted a long free kick with a strike into the right portion of the net.
In the 67th minute, the Mustangs brought themselves level when Lydia Anderson settled a clearance before chipping to Abutin, who put away a point-blank opportunity making it 2-all.
Then in the 82nd minute, the usual suspects hooked up for the game-winner, as Abutin dropped it back to Krieghoff, who smashed a shot from 30 yards out into the upper-right corner.
Krieghoff (at 20' and 44') and Lancaster (71' and 80') also placed two other shots on target, and Abutin (30'), Kendra Bonsall (39'), Gianna Rosati (49') and Anderson (80') also forced Elizabeth Silas into saves. Alyssa Giannetti made saves for Cal Poly in the 36th and 60th minutes.
Krieghoff's 13th goal of the season was also the 45th of her career, tying the school record set by Kolleen Kassis from 1992-95.
Additionally, now with 96 career points (via the 45 goals plus six assists), Krieghoff surpassed Gina Oceguera (95 from 1995-99) for No. 2 in that category. Kassis had 114.
Also in the win, Abutin brought her 2014 assist total to 11, the second-highest single-season figure ever at Cal Poly. She's just one away from matching the program record, held by Shana Stickel since 1997.
Lancaster moved into 14th in school history in career points, with 41 (16-9). The senior is also now tied for 10th all-time in starts (65) among players in the outfield, along with Heather Bryan (2000-04) and Sharon Day (2003-05, '07).
Cal Poly will have Friday off before hosting UC Santa Barbara (2-4-0, 8-7-2) for a Blue-Green Rivalry match at noon Sunday.
