SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 24 Oregon State won the final three bouts to snap a 12-12 tie and defeated Cal Poly 22-12 in a Pac-12 Conference dual wrestling meet Thursday afternoon.
The match was held outdoors in the plaza of the University Union, Cal Poly's first match held under the sun. Light rain fell in San Luis Obispo for the first time in over 50 days Thursday morning, but the skies cleared in time for the match.
"The environment was fantastic," said third-year Mustang head coach Brendan Buckley. "I was happy for our guys to wrestle in an environment where there was such excitement. There was a lot of Cal Poly pride present today."
Cal Poly won four of the first seven bouts to tie the team score. Dominic Kastl, Spencer Empey, Britain Longmire and Devon Lotito all won by decision to knot the score at 12-12.
Oregon State pulled away with wins by Joey Delgado, Scott Sakaguchi and Jordan Henrickson.
Oregon State improved to 9-5 overall and 3-0 with Thursday's win. Cal Poly fell to 3-6 and 1-2.
Kastl improved to 15-3 with a 6-4 decision over Joe Latham in a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers. Kastl is ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division I Coaches Poll and Latham is No. 24.
Kastl, the Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds two years ago wrestling up a weight class at 174 in his junior season, scored an escape and takedown in the second period for a 3-0 lead, surrendered an escape and takedown later in the period and snapped the 3-3 tie with a takedown and riding time in the final period to clinch the victory.
Empey earned an 8-3 decision over Mick Dougharity at 285 pounds. Now 12-10 on the year, Empey turned around a 3-2 deficit with a two-point near fall in the second period and added a reversal, technical violation and riding time in the final period for the win.
Longmire continued Cal Poly's comeback from a 12-3 deficit by posting a 4-2 sudden-victory decision over Pat Rollins at 125. Longmire, 11-12 for the season, scored a reversal in the second period while Rollins tallied escapes in the second and third periods to knot the score at 2-2.
Longmire produced a takedown 18 seconds into the first overtime period for the win.
At 133, Lotito (pictured above) blanked Drew Van Anrooy 5-0 to improve his record to 18-7.
Lotito, who had won his last three matches by fall, rode out the second period and the match was still scoreless when the Mustang sophomore tallied a pair of two-point near falls in the third period plus riding time.
Oregon State snapped the 12-12 tie with two decisions and a major.
Cal Poly lost two close matches at 165 and 149. Freshman Travis Berridge led 9-6 early in the third period of the 165-pound bout before giving up a takedown and three-point near fall in a wild 12-9 opening-match loss to Toney Chay while senior Kyle Chené lost a tough 3-2 decision to No. 12-ranked Scott Sakaguchi at 149.
"It was well within our grasp," Buckley said of the dual meet. "We showed a good deal of fight though and are indeed improving. If we win at 165 and 149 and pick up a major or avoid a major, it's a different match."
Cal Poly will compete in the California Collegiate Open hosted by San Francisco State on Saturday.
