UCSB Clinches Big West Series Against No. 17 Cal Poly With 13-2 Win

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara shattered a 2-2 tie with 11 runs in the sixth inning and coasted to a 13-2 victory over No. 17 Cal Poly in the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series Saturday afternoon in Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The Gauchos sent 16 batters to the plate and parlayed eight hits, one Mustang error, three walks and a hit batsman into the largest inning against Cal Poly in 18 years. Robby Nesovic drove in four runs with two hits in the rally while Woody Woodward, Ryan Clark and Cameron Newell each added two-run hits.
The win clinched the series for the Gauchos, who won Friday's game 4-2. UC Santa Barbara is 16-13 for the season while Cal Poly fell to 20-8. Both teams are 3-2 in Big West games, tied for second place with three other teams, all two games behind frontrunner Cal State Fullerton.
Southpaw Justin Jacome (3-2) allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings for the win, walking two and striking out five. Domenic Mazza pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Gauchos, striking out the side.
The loss went to Mustang sophomore southpaw Matt Imhof (3-1), who surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings and allowed the first two runners to reach base in the sixth before he was taken out of the game. Five Mustang relievers were used in the game, with Chase Johnson and Danny Zandona each tossing one scoreless frame.
Cal Poly collected seven hits, including two singles by senior second baseman Denver Chavez (pictured above) and a double by junior third baseman Michael Hoo.
Woodward and Nesovic each had four of UC Santa Barbara's 16 hits.
Trailing 2-0 after one inning, Cal Poly tied the game with single runs in the third and fifth frames. Sophomore left fielder Jordan Ellis singled to drive in the first Mustang run and Chavez knocked in the run in the fifth with a single.
The 11-run UCSB rally was the largest against the Mustangs since Cal State Northridge tallied 12 runs in the third inning of a 27-10 victory in 1995, Cal Poly's first Division I season.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. with sophomore right-hander Bryan Granger (4-2, 3.96 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs have not been swept in a series since 2011 and have not lost more than two games in a row this season.
