
Cal Poly to Play Conference Leading Pacific, UC Davis

This Week: The Mustangs will travel to conference leading Pacific for a game on Thursday, Feb. 7. Cal Poly will remain on the road and play UC Davis on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip for the game against the Tigers (12-8, 8-1 BWC) is set for 7 pm while the game with the Aggies (9-11, 4-5 BWC) will tip at 2 pm. Cal Poly enters the week with a 12-8 overall record and are in second place in the conference with a 6-3 record.

Pacific: Tigers enter the game with the Mustangs with an 18-3 overall record and have a conference leading 8-1 record in Big West games. The Tigers lone conference loss came at the hands of the Mustangs on Jan. 12 in a triple-overtime game, 96-95. Four players score in double figures for the Tigers led by Kendall Rodriguez with 13.0 points. Kendall Kenyon adds 12.3 with Jena Johnson and Erica McKenzie add 11.3 and 10.5 respectively.
History with the Tigers: Pacific holds a 25-23 advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series including the Mustangs triple-overtime win on Jan. 12
UC Davis: The Aggies enter the week with a 9-11 overall record and post a 4-5 conference record. UCD will host UC Santa Barbara before the Mustangs come to visit. Sydnee Fipps leads the team scoring 17.1 points per game followed by Cortney French with 12.6 points.
History with the Aggies: UC Davis holds a 22-21 advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series including the Mustangs, 73-71, win on Jan. 10.
A Little About the Mustangs.....:
• The Mustangs are coming off back-to-back Big West Regular Season Championships posting a 12-4 conference record both seasons.
• The Mustangs won 17 games last season, one off pervious year (18) that tied for second-best in school history since making the move to Division I in the 1994-95 season. Cal Poly posted a Division I best 21 wins during the 2008-09 season when the team went 21-11. During the 2009-10 season, head coach Faith Mimnaugh's squad recorded 18 wins... Overall in women's basketball history (since 1974-75), the team posted a 21-12 record in the 1981-82 season and 18-11 in 1979-80 when the team was competing at the Division II level.
• The Mustangs have claimed the last three Big West Conference Player of the year awards with Kristina Santiago winning twice (2011-12 and 2009-10) and Rachel Clancy winning in 2010-11.
• The Mustangs have advanced to the post season the last two seasons, both in the WNIT. In 2011 the Mustangs hosted California and lost 74-60 while in the 2012 season Cal Poly traveled to Seattle and lost to Washington, 90-71.
• Cal Poly head coach Faith Mimnaugh picked up her 200 career win at Cal Poly with the team's 72-63 win at Nevada. She is already has the most wins as a coach in program history, amassing 204 wins to this point in 15-plus seasons.

Schlemer Shines: Junior Molly Schlemer has scored in double figures in the last eight games and 10 of the last 11 including a career-high 28 points against Pacific when she was named the conference player of the week. Since conference started, Schlemer leads the Mustangs in scoring with 16.3 points per game and has grabbed 7.2 rebounds per contest. She is shooting a remarkable 63 percent from the floor, making 64 of 102 field goals. Overall she averages 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while hitting 56 percent of her shots from the floor.
50 Percent: For the fist time this season the Mustangs shot better then 50 percent from the floor in the game with Cal State Fullerton..Cal Poly shot 48 percent in the first half and led Cal Sate Fullerton, 33-24 at the break... In the second half the Mustangs put up 45 points and shot 66 percent from the floor ... The team shot 57 percent overall for the game....
Ervin, Back Where She Belongs....: Junior Jonae Ervin is back where she belongs.... Among the leaders in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio.... As of three weeks ago she had played enough games to qualify for the NCAA ranking and she steps in at No. 4 in the nation at 2.67 per game.... Last season she led the nation with a ratio of 2.67.
An Assists or Two...: The Mustangs are ranked 19th in the nation and lead the Big West Conference with 16.8 assists per game. Four players have dished out more then 40 assists this season, led by Jonae Ervin with 72. Kayla Griffin is second on the team with 69 followed by Ariana Elegado with 61. Caroline Reeves has dished out 49. Ervin has amassed her total in just 16 games.
Playing the Best... : Cal Poly opened the 2012-13 season playing two teams ranked in the top 25. The Mustangs opened the season with No. 24 Oklahoma State, falling 90-59. Then came back after a pair of wins to play No. 12 California (87-61). .. The are now No. 21 and No. 6 respectively...
RPI.... : . The Mustangs are ranked 109th this week in the NCAA RPI... ... Last week at 105.. and the previous week at 95th...
Griffin Getting it Going..... : Senior Kayla Griffin had her best game of the season and possibly her career in the game with UC Santa Barbara when she connected for a career-best 21 points when she hit eight of 15 shots from the floor and three of four from long range... Her all around game included five assists and four steals without committing a turnover... For the season Griffin is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per game and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.
Schlemer's Career Night: Junior Molly Schlemer, who established a career high in scoring in Cal Poly's historic triple-overtime win over Pacific, was named the Big West Player of the Week. Schlemer averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds in two Big West Conference games at home last week. In the 73-71 win over UC Davis on Thursday, Schlemer came off the bench to spark Cal Poly with 12 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes of play when she hit five of seven shots from the floor. Two days later, Schlemer scored a career-high 28 points when she converted 13 of 17 shots from the floor as Cal Poly beat Pacific 96-95 in the Mustangs' first-ever triple-overtime game. She backed up her career night with a 22 point game against UCSB when she made 11 of 15 shots from the floor with eight rebounds..
