
Three Wrestlers Still Alive in Wrestlebacks at Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Cal Poly 149-pounder Blake Kastl and 157-pounder Maxamillian Schneider lost their quarterfinal-round matches in the 2013 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday in the Las Vegas Convention Center and joined 133-pounder Devon Lotito in the wrestlebacks.
Kastl, seeded No. 8, earned a 7-3 decision over Justin Gonzales of Colorado State-Pueblo and a 3-2 decision over Cody Ruggierello of Hofstra. In the quarterfinals, Kastl dropped a 16-0 technical fall (3:47) to top-seeded Kendric Maple of Oklahoma.
Kastl meets Natrelle Demison of Air Force in the fourth round of wrestlebacks Saturday morning.
Schneider posted a 9-3 decision over John Boyle of American, then pinned 12th-seeded Paul Hancock of Army in 2 minutes, 4 seconds. Seeded No. 5, Schneider fell 3-1 to Brian Murphy of Michigan in the quarterfinals and will take on Robert Burg of Navy on Saturday morning.
Seven other Mustang wrestlers have been eliminated from the wrestlebacks.
Britain Longmire at 125 pounds, Devon Lotito at 133, Dominic Kastl at 174 and Sean Dougherty at 184 all won two of their first three matches, but only Lotito won his match in the third round of wrestlebacks.
Lotito, who finished third in the Las Vegas Invitational a year ago, defeated Colton Fought of Arizona State 3-2 and will face Colton Rasche of Navy in the fourth round Saturday morning.
Mustang 141-pounder Colt Shorts, 165-pounder Sohrab Movahedi, 197-pounder Nicolas Johnson and 285-pounder Spencer Empey were eliminated with two losses earlier Friday. Empey won one of his three matches while the other three Cal Poly wrestlers went 0-2.
Oklahoma leads the team standings with 84.5 points, followed by Nebraska with 75 and Michigan with 72.5. Cal Poly is tied for 23rd place with Arizona State entering Saturday's matches, both with 16.5 points. There are 33 teams competing in the two-day tournament.
