
Lotito Places Seventh at 133 Pounds in Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Cal Poly sophomore wrestler Devon Lotito claimed seventh place in the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, which concluded a two-day run Monday in Welsh-Ryan Arena at Northwestern University.
Seeded 10th at 133 pounds, Lotito (pictured at right) won two of three matches Monday, earning a fall and a decision, and improved his record for the season to 13-7.
After winning two of three matches Sunday, Lotito dropped into the wrestlebacks and, on Monday morning, pinned Levi Wolfensperger of Northern Iowa in 4 minutes, 11 seconds.
Later in the third session of the tournament, Lotito dropped a 6-2 decision to third-seeded Mason Beckman of Lehigh.
In the match for seventh and eighth place, Lotito notched a 5-3 decision against eighth-seeded Rossi Bruno of Michigan.
Lotito, the 2013 Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds and a national qualifier, was coming off a third-place finish in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 22 and posted a 3-2 record at the Las Vegas Invitational two weeks earlier.
Four other Cal Poly wrestlers were eliminated from the Midlands Championships on Sunday.
The Mustangs finished 26th in the team standings with 15.5 points. There were 47 teams in the tournament. Iowa won the team title wqith 187.5 points, thanks to three champions and four runners-up, followed by Edinboro with 102.5 points and Michigan with 84 points.
Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, is 2-1 in dual meets this year and returns to action Saturday (Jan. 4) with a 1 p.m. non-conference dual against North Dakota State in the Mott Athletics Center.
