RENO, Nevada -- Although six Cal Poly wrestlers won three or more matches Sunday, just one Mustang -- 133-pounder Devon Lotito -- was a placewinner.
The sophomore from Bethlehem, Penn., placed third in his weight class at the Reno Tournament of Champions with a 5-1 record. The 2013 Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds is now 9-5 on the year.
Lotito reached the semifinals at the Reno Events Center with a technical fall and two decisions before dropping a 9-0 major decision to Nick Soto of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Lotito then posted 6-1 and 5-1 decisions to claim third place.
At 149 pounds, Mustang redshirt freshman Blake Kastl posted a 5-2 record, losing 7-3 to Donovan Halpin of Stanford and 6-1 to Mike Hamel of Grand Canyon. Kastl's five wins included one fall and four decisions. Ranked 18th this week by Amateur Wrestling News, Kastl is now 13-5 for the season.
Also at 149 pounds, senior Kyle Chené won four of six bouts, all by decision, improving to 7-6 on the year. Chené dropped a 3-1 decision to Brandon Richardson of Wyoming in his final bout.
Mustang 133-pounder Victor Trujillo, 141-pounder Colt Shorts and 285-pounder Spencer Empey all posted 3-2 marks in the single-day tournament which featured 23 teams, including five in the top 25.
Mustang 174-pounder Dominic Kastl, the Pac-12 champion at 165 two years before sitting out the 2012-13 season with a lower back injury, won his first match Sunday by fall before bowing out of the tournament due to injury. Kastl was ranked No. 20 this week and is 7-2.
Cal Poly will send five wrestlers to the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29 and 30 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The quintet includes Lotito, Chené, Dominic Kastl, Dougherty and Empey.
