RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Cal Baptist won six of the 10 bouts and, despite forfeiting at heavyweight, edged Cal Poly 19-18 in a non-conference dual meet Monday night in Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers collected a major decision at 141 pounds and five decisions for a 19-9 lead with two bouts to go. Cal Poly scored the final nine points on a 9-8 decision by Nicolas Johnson at 197 pounds and the forfeit at heavyweight, falling one point shy of catching Cal Baptist.
The loss was Cal Poly's first in three dual meets this season. Cal Baptist was wrestling its first dual meet of the year.
Johnson scored a takedown and three-point near fall in the second period for a 9-3 lead against Kenneth Tribble and held on for his first win of the season.
Mustang 174-pounder Dominic Kastl (pictured at right) won by fall over David Irish in just 59 seconds. The 2012 Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds scored a takedown 20 seconds into his match and pinned Irish 39 seconds later to improve to 7-2 on the year.
Cal Poly's other winner was Devon Lotito at 133 pounds with a 5-1 decision over Taylor Hall. Now 4-4 on the year, the 2013 Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds scored takedowns in each of the first two periods and compiled a one-minute, 20-second advantage in riding time for the 5-1 victory.
Cal Poly trailed 16-3 after the first six bouts before Kastl sparked the comeback with his fall. Cal Baptist 184-pounder Caleb Gerl edged Sean Dougherty 3-2 with a first-period takedown and riding time, giving the Lancers just enough points for the dual meet victory.
Dougherty scored a reversal 30 seconds into the final period to tie the match at 2-2 and chose the bottom position after an injury to Gerl, but could not escape in the final 90 seconds as Gerl held on for the win.
Another close match occurred at 125 pounds, the opening bout, with Bryden Lazaro of Cal Baptist scoring an escape four seconds into the final period to snap a 6-6 tie and holding on for a 7-6 decision over Mustang senior Britain Longmire.
At 165, Alec Smith of Cal Baptist scored a takedown with a minute to go in the final period to break a 4-4 deadlock en route to a 6-4 decision over Mustang freshman Sohrab Movahedi.
Cal Poly will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Convention Center.
