No. 12 Hawai'i Takes Mustangs in Three Sets
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 12 Rainbow Wahine proved to be too much the Cal Poly volleyball team, winning in three sets on Friday at Mott Athletics Center in front of 978 fans. Hawai'i won by set scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19.
With the win Hawai'i improves to 19-4 overall and 8-3 in Big West play while the Mustangs fall to 10-13 overall and 4-6 in conference matches. Cal Poly will return to the court when they travel to Cal State Northridge for a Big West Conference on Nov. 14 for a 7 pm match.
Sophomore Hannah Schleis led the team with seven kills with freshman Taylor Gruenewald and senior Chelsea Hardin adding six each. Senior Marianne Gera added five kills on 11 swings. Sophomore Nicole Kessler and senior Steffi Sooter each tallied nine digs to lead the team. Gruenewald and Gera were each credited with two blocks, each with one solo.
Nikki Taylor led Hawai'i with 12 kills while Tai Manu-Olevao added 11 kills. Ali Longo led all players with 12 digs with Emily Hartong adding 11 digs.
Hawai'i hit .280 while limiting the Mustangs to a .075 hitting percentage and held a 44-31 advantage in digs.
Hawai'i dominated the first set, outhitting the Mustangs, .333 to -.031. Taylor and Hartong led the team with three kills each while Gruenewald had three for the Mustangs.
In the second set the Mustangs kept it close, but Hawai'i still outhit the Mustangs, .216 to .105. Schleis paced the Mustangs with four kills in the set while Mau-Olevao had four kills for Hawai'i.
The third set saw six ties and three lead changes as the Mustangs held a lead midway through the set. UH hit .306 for the set with the Mustangs hitting .139. Gera led the Mustangs in the set with three kills while Manu-Olevao had five for Hawai'i.
