
Schneider Claims 157-Pound Title, Cal Poly Fourth in Roadrunner Open

FRESNO, Calif. -- Maxamillian Schneider captured the 157-pound title and eight other Cal Poly wrestlers were place winners as the Mustangs posted a fourth-place team finish at the Roadrunner Open on Sunday at Selland Arena.
Schneider went 5-0 with three falls, a decision and a major decision to claim his crown. His falls were in 36 seconds, 1:04 and 1:07 and he decisioned Ben Dorsay of Maryland 12-6 in the semifinals before finishing his day with a 16-6 major decision over Bret Baumbach of Stanford in the finals. Baumbach is ranked 17th in the nation.
Mustang heavyweight Spencer Empey finished second with a 3-1 record, losing only to No. 7-ranked Spencer Myers of Maryland, 9-2, in the final round. Empey reached the finals with three decisions.
Another second-place Mustang finisher was Blake Kastl at 149 pounds. He won his first three bouts by a major decision and two decisions before dropping a 7-0 decision to Dylan Cottrell of Appalachian State in the finals.
Sean Dougherty placed fourth at 184 pounds while Colt Shorts was fifth at 141 pounds. Other Mustang finishers were 125-pounder Britain Longmire, 149-pounder Kyle Chené and 174-pounder Dominic Kastl, all placing sixth.
Competing unattached, Colton Schilling placed fourth at 133 pounds.
Maryland claimed the team title with 81 points, followed by Stanford's unattached wrestlers (65) and Navy (53). Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield shared fourth place, each with 53 points.
Cal Poly returns to action next Sunday with a dual meet at San Francisco State.
