
Men and Women Finish Second at West Regional Pre-View

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Both the men's and women's cross country teams placed second at the NCAA West Regional Pre-View race hosted by Sacramento State. The meet was held on Friday at the Haggin Oaks Golf Club as a pre-view for the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 15.
The women's team was edged by one point, 77-78, by UCLA, but outdistanced three other teams ranked ahead of the Mustangs in the regional rankings. Cal Poly entered the race ranked 11th in the region and finished above UC Davis (ranked 6th), Oregon State (ranked 7th) and San Francisco (ranked 5th).
Cal Poly, competing without sophomore sensation Laura Hollander, was paced by freshman Mary Jo Wright in 9th place when she covered the 5k course in a time of 17:08.
The women's team was tightly packed with freshman Ashley Windsor in 14th (17:13), sophomore Ashley Bergstrom in 16th (17:19) and senior Diana George in 18th (17:20).
Sophomore Rachel Bush was the last scoring Mustangs in 21st with a time of 17:25. Other Mustangs competing included senior Ericka Schaeffer in 35th (17:39) and sophomore Michelle Read in 65th (18:04).
The Mustang men's team placed second with 67 points while UCLA won the pre-view with 54 points. UCLA entered the race as the 12th-ranked team in the nation and third regionally. Cal Poly was ranked eighth regionally.
The Mustangs were paced by senior Sean Davidson when he placed second when he completed the 8k course in a time of 23:30. He was edged by St. Mary's runner, Rajpaul Pannu, with a time of 23:28.
Fellow senior Chris Frias was fourth overall with a time of 23:36. Junior Mitch Moriarty, who produced the second fastest split time (13:40), finished 13th with a time of 23.58. Freshman Tyler Huntley had a solid showing in 21st with a time of 24:27. Fellow freshman Dimitri Voytilla was the last scoring Mustang to cross the line in 23rd (24:36).
Other Mustangs competing in the race included sophomore Kyle Lynch in 29th (24:42) and freshman Clayton Hutchins (25:05).
UC Santa Barbara was third (86 pts.) followed by UC Davis (111 pts.) and California (123 pts.).
