
Cal Poly Falls to Stanford, 27-9, in Pac-12 Dual Meet

STANFORD, Calif. – Cal Poly let a 9-7 lead midway through its Pac-12 dual wrestling meet slip away as Stanford won the final five matches en route to a 27-9 victory Sunday afternoon.
Mustang 133-pounder Devon Lotito, 141-pounder Brandan Rocha and 157-pounder Kyle Chene all won by decision for the 9-7 advantage after five bouts.
Stanford, however, won two matches by major decision, two more by decision and accepted a forfeit at 285 pounds to win the dual meet going away.
Lotito earned a 7-1 decision over Peter Russo to improve to 23-7 on the season. After a scoreless first period, Lotito scored a reversal and three-point near-fall for a 5-0 lead in the second period and added a penalty point and riding time for the win.
Rocha was a 1-0 winner over Josh Lauderdale, scoring an escape in the second period. Lauderdale chose the neutral position in the final period and neither wrestler could score any points as Rocha held on for the win, evening his record at 11-11.
Chene (pictured at right) is now 14-8 on the year after posting a 4-2 decision over Kyle Meyer. Chene tallied takedowns in both the second and third periods for the victory.
At 184, Mustang Sean Dougherty was bidding for his 19th win of the season but fell behind 4-0 in the first period on a takedown and two-point near-fall and could not recover. Dougherty scored a reversal in each of the final two periods, but couldn't overcome a 7-2 deficit in falling 7-4.
Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, is 2-7 in duals and will compete in the California Collegiate Open at San Francisco State next weekend.
