Cal Poly Matmen Fall to Air Force 39-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior 184-pounder Sean Dougherty was Cal Poly's lone winner in a 39-3 loss to Air Force in a non-conference dual meet Sunday afternoon in the Mott Athletics Center.
Dougherty, from Walnut Creek, raised his record to 18-8 with a 9-3 decision over Falcon 184-pounder Devin Hightower, scoring seven points in the final period.
After giving up a takedown in the opening period, Dougherty scored a reversal in the second period to tie the match at 2-2. With Hightower choosing the bottom position for the third period, Dougherty scored a pair of three-point near falls, rode out the period and earned 2 minutes, 3 seconds in riding time for the final point in the decision.
Dougherty (pictured at right) is a graduate of Las Lomas High School and was a redshirt for the 2009-10 season at UC Davis before the Aggies dropped the sport. He then wrestled two years ago at Cuesta College before transferring to Cal Poly, where he compiled a 6-12 record last season.
Mustang 133-pounder Devon Lotito compiled a 2-1 lead over Dylan Hyder before surrendering an escape and takedown in the final period of a 4-3 loss, falling to 22-7 on the year.
At 149, Cal Poly freshman Dillen Rocha jumped to an 8-1 lead in the first period with a takedown and a pair of three-point near-falls. Logan Burch, however, turned Rocha on his back in the second period and scored a fall in 3 minutes, 58 seconds.
Air Force, ranked No. 25 in the nation by InterMat, improved to 8-1 in dual meets this season while Cal Poly fell to 2-6.
Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, returns to action next Sunday with a 2 p.m. Pac-12 dual meet at Stanford.
