
Cal Poly Finishes 13th in Saint Mary's Invitational

SEASIDE, Calif. – Freshman Cole Nygren, competing in his first collegiate tournament, was Cal Poly's top finisher in the Saint Mary's Invitational men's golf tournament Tuesday at the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses on the north side of the Monterey Peninsula.
Nygren, a recent graduate of Alexander Dawson School in Longmont, Colo., shot a final-round 71 to climb from 46th place into a tie for 28th place in the last of three rounds of play. He finished with a seven-over-par 223 total.
Senior Grant Martens, in 29th place after the first two rounds of play Monday, carded a final-round 76 and slipped into a tie for 37th place with his 226 total.
Cal Poly maintained its 13th-place standing over the final 18 holes, finishing with a four-person, 54-hole 914 total after a final-round 303. The Mustangs were seventh after the morning round Monday.
Saint Mary's won its own tournament with a four-under-par 869 total, followed by Kentucky at 867 and Oregon at 874. There were 15 schools in the season-opening tournament.
Cal Poly's other scores included a 78 for a 231 total by Camden Price, placing 57th; a 79 for a 235 total by Justin Haley (pictured above), placing 69th; and a 78 for a 238 total by Scott Patterson, placing 76th.
Individual winner was Ben Geyer of Saint Mary's with a final-round 65 for a four-under-par 212 total, one stroke ahead of runners-up Scott Lowe of Santa Clara and Jobim Carlos of San Francisco.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 8-9 by hosting the Firestone Grill Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo.
