Cal Poly Baseball Rallies to Beat CSU Bakersfield, 6-2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Jimmy Allen's RBI triple in the fifth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and Cal Poly, which trailed 2-1, earned a 6-2 victory over CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Hardt Field.
Cal Poly won three of four games against the Roadrunners -– the Mustangs won two of three in a weekend series at Baggett Stadium -– and improved to 30-20 for the season with their eighth win in 11 games. CSU Bakersfield fell to 20-26 with its sixth loss in seven games.
Each team used four pitchers in the game. Junior right-hander Nick Grim (3-2) became the pitcher of record when Allen's RBI triple scored the go-ahead run and earned the win by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Michael Holback and Chase Johnson each pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Mustang starter Bryan Granger allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
The loss went to James Barragan (0-4), the second Roadrunner pitcher, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in two innings.
Cal Poly outhit CSU Bakersfield 15-9, led by junior center fielder Mitch Haniger and freshman designated hitter Alex Michaels, each with three hits. Haniger had a double and two singles, driving in one run, while Michaels (pictured above) collected a single, a run-scoring double and a solo home run, his second of the season.
Allen, senior shortstop Mike Miller and sophomore catcher Chris Hoo each added two hits for the Mustangs, who are now 2-5 in Tuesday games and 13-2 when scoring in the first inning.
Seven of Cal Poly's hits went for extra bases.
Shortstop Tyler Shryock and right fielder Jordie Hein each had two hits for CSU Bakersfield.
Tim Wise tripled with one out and Haniger singled to right field to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The triple by Wise, his first of the year, extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 consecutive games.
CSU Bakersfield responded with two runs in the third on a single, double and triple.
Cal Poly tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to turn the game around and added two insurance runs in the seventh.
Michaels opened the fourth with his home run to right field. Miller led off the fifth with a single up the middle and came home on Allen's triple to left-center field, snapping the 2-2 tie.
Miller's RBI single in the sixth made it 4-2 and, in the seventh, Michaels doubled to score one run and David Armendariz laid down a safety squeeze bunt for the final run of the game.
Cal Poly plays its final three home games of the 2012 season this weekend, hosting Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara for a Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
