
Walk-Off Win by Minnesota Clinches Baseball Series Against Cal Poly, 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Andy Henkemeyer singled up the middle with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run as Minnesota defeated Cal Poly 4-3 in the final game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Monday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Cal Poly scored a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 3-3, but suffered its second walk-off loss of the year, falling to 12-7 on the year. Minesota improved to 9-11, clinching the series two games to one.
Cal Poly jumped to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings.
Sophomore left fielder David Armendariz hit a solo home run in the second frame and junior center fielder Mitch Haniger singled to drive in a run in the third and give Cal Poly its 2-0 advantage.
Minnesota countered with a two-run single by catcher Matt Halloran in the third and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Ryan Abrahamson in the fourth for a 3-2 lead and neither team scored again until the ninth.
Sophomore third baseman Jimmy Allen led off the Mustang ninth with a double to right-center field, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore first baseman Tim Wise.
Sophomore right-hander Chase Johnson retired the first two Minnesota batters in the bottom of the ninth, but second baseman Tony Skjefte singled, Troy Larson walked and Henkemeyer ended the game with his RBI single up the middle.
Cal Poly, outhit for the third time in the series, was led by Armendariz with a single and home run. Allen and senior shortstop Mike Miller added doubles.
Minnesota, which outhit Cal Poly 9-7, was led by Larson and Henkemeyer with two hits each.
Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss. Starter Kyle Brueggemann allowed three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings while freshman southpaw Matt Imhof (pictured above) pitched well in relief of Brueggemann, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit, two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Drew Ghelfi (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Austin Lubinsky despite giving up the tying run in the top of the ninth inning.
Cal Poly opens an 11-game homestand Wednesday afternoon with a 1 p.m. non-conference game against Dartmouth (2-5) in Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs also host San Diego State (9-11) for a four-game weekend series.
