Cal Poly Falls to Utah Valley, 19-17, in Non-Conference Dual Wrestling Meet

STANFORD, Calif. – Cal Poly won three of the final four bouts, but couldn't overcome a 16-7 deficit and fell 19-17 to Utah Valley in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night at Stanford.
Ryan DesRoches and Atticus Disney (pictured at right) won by decision while Ryan Smith earned a major decision for the Mustangs, who fell to 5-6 on the year. Utah Valley improved to 4-7.
Boris Novachkov won by major decision and Kyle Chene added a decision as Cal Poly tied the match at 7-7 after four bouts. Utah Valley wrestlers then posted a decision and a fall to take a 16-7 lead and held on for the victory.
Novachkov (25-2), ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds, was a 12-4 winner over Avery Garner to put Cal Poly on the scoreboard and Chene (3-5) followed with a 2-1 decision over 12th-ranked Josh Wilson, thanks to a 1-minute, 7-second advantage in riding time.
DesRoches (23-1), ranked No. 4, scored a takedown, escape and nearly two minutes in riding time advantage for a 4-1 decision over Monte Schmalhaus at 174.
Mustang 184-pounder Derrick Hawkins battled David Prieto to a 1-1 draw in regulation, but surrendered a takedown and two near-fall points in overtime, dropping a 5-1 decision.
Trailing by nine points with two bouts to go, Cal Poly only mustered seven – a 15-6 major decision by No. 18 Smith (18-10) at 197 pounds and a 4-3 decision by Disney (10-9) at 285 pounds. Disney snapped a 3-3 tie with a 1-minute, 1-second advantage in riding time for one point.
Cal Poly will compete in the California Collegiate Open on Saturday at San Francisco State.
