
Cal Poly Men's Golf Finishes 18th in Wyoming Cowboy Desert Classic

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Cal Poly, in 22nd place after the first round of play Saturday, climbed into 18th place following the third and final round of play Sunday in the Wyoming Cowboy Desert Classic at the Classic Club.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs, who shot a first-round four-person 307 total, followed with a 296 in the second round Sunday morning and a 294 in the afternoon round to finish with an 897 total.
UNLV claimed the team title with an 844 total on the 7,305-yard, par-72 course. Texas Tech finished second at 851 followed by Auburn at 855. There were 24 schools in the 54-hole event.
Individual winner was Kevin Penner of UNLV with rounds of 67, 69 and 73 for a seven-under-par 209 total. Finishing tied for second place were Derek Ernst of UNLV, Corey Conners of Kent State and Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor with 210 totals.
Cal Poly's top finisher was Scott Patterson (pictured at right) with rounds of 76, 71 and 70 for a 217 total, tied for 27th place. Grant Martens finished at 222 with a final-round 77 and a tie for 52nd place while Justin Haley placed 68th with a 225 total following his final-round 70.
Matt Yount and Bryce Greeley both carded final-round 77s – Yount finishing tied for 110th place at 237 and Greeley placing 112th at 238.
Cal Poly returns to action March 22-23 with the Cal Poly Lamkin Grip Cup at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
