
No. 12 Cal Overwhelms Mustangs, 87-61

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team was overmatched by the No. 12 Cal Golden Bears, 87-61, in a non-conference basketball game on Monday in Berkeley. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 2-2 while Cal improves to 3-0.
Cal Poly returns to the court on Friday when the Mustangs host Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Nov. 23 at 2 pm in Mott Gym.
Senior Kayla Griffin led the team with 13 points while fellow senior Brittany Woodard and junior Molly Schlemer each added 10 points. Senior Ashley Cascio added nine points off the bench.
Griffin's points came when she hit five of 12 shots from the floor while Woodard hit three of seven including a three with Schlemer as five of eight from the floor. Cascio hit all three of her attempts from long range.
Reshanda Gray led the Bears with 22 points while Gennifer Brandon added 18 points.
Cal Poly was outrebounded 44-31 while committing six less turnovers, 16-10. Cal shot 50 percent from the floor with the Mustangs limited to 37 percent. Cal Poly did hit seven of 14 from long range while Cal hit only four of 17.
Cal Poly trailed Cal, 11-10, after a three pointer by Griffin, but Cal went on an 11-1 run to hold a 21-11 lead at 11.57. Cal expanded its lead on a layup by Caldwell to give Cal a 31-12 lead. Cal settled for a 48-33 lead at the break.
In the second half Cal made it a 23 advantage (63-40) on a three pointer by Reshanda Gray. Cal held a 67-46 lead on a jumper by Gray followed by a media timeout at 11:53. Cal Poly took a 30 second timeout at 9:38 left in the game with Cal holding a 72-48 lead.
Woodard hit a jumper at 2:47 to keep the Mustangs within the score of 82-57, but Cal settled for a an87-61 win.
