
Cal Poly Falls to Cal State Fullerton in Four Sets

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Mustangs had three players record double figures in kills, but it would not be enough as the Cal Poly volleyball team fell in four sets to Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference match in Fullerton on Friday.
The Titans won by set scores of 13-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 3-24 overall and 2-13 in conference matches while Cal State Fullerton improves to 15-13 overall and 9-6 in BWC contests.
Junior Holly Franks led the Mustangs with 16 kills while senior Molly Pon added 11 kills and Megan McConnell 10. Seven other Mustangs had four kills each. McConnell made it a double-double with 11 digs while Nicole Kessler led the team with 17 digs with Shannon Garrett and Steffi Sooter each adding 14 digs.
Bre Moreland led the Titans with 24 kills with Kayla Neto adding 15 in the win.
Cal Poly outhit CSF, .232 to .196 and held a 51-50 advantage in assists, with CSF holding down a lead in service aces (8-6) and digs (67-56). Cal Pol held down a 6-4 advantage in blocks.
In the first set the Mustangs took control and never let the Titans into the set. Sophomore Megan Groess put away a ball that gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead and built a 15-9 lead on a kill by Pon. Cal Poly eventually put away the set on a block by McConnell and Groess and an attack error by CSF, 25-13.
In the second set the Titans moved out to a four point lead, 12-8, and never looked back in a 25-22 win to even the match.
In the third set the Mustangs came back to tie things up, 13-13, on a kill by McConnell. The teams traded points until CSF gained a two point advantage, 17-15, on a kill by Bre Moreland. CSF maintained a lead and put the set away, 25-22.
In the fourth set, CSF gained a 6-3 lead on a kill by Moreland until the Mustangs tied things up on a McConnell kills and an attack error by CSF at 8-8 and took a 9-8 lead on a ball handling error by the Titans. The teams traded point until CSF gained a 13-11 advantage on a kill by Moreland. CSF maintained a four point advantage and increased the lead to six on a service error by Schleis. Cal Poly came back to tie things up, 19-19, on kill by McConnell. CSF came back to build a three point lead, 23-20, forcing a Cal Poly timeout. CSF went on to a 25-21 win in the set and the match.
