The Cal Poly women's soccer team dropped their game against Cal State Northridge , 1-0, bringing its season to an end. The game was the semifinal round in the Big West Tournament. The two teams were well matched, in their last meeting they played to a tie.
The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute when Matador, Melissa Fernandez, scored from a shot from the top of the box. It was her seventh goal of the season. Cal Poly goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti would make five saves, but the number does not match up to her impressive play between the posts.
Freshman Elise Krieghoff took six shots on the night, but could not get one past the goalkeeper of the year Cynthia Jacobo who made four saves on the night. The Mustangs came out strong in the second half of the game. The Matadors were forced to play more defense. Cal Poly players took 10 shots to Cal State Northridge's 14 shots.
Coach Alex Crozier calls the 2012 season, "a rollercoaster. The players responded well to everything this season and played some great soccer."
The team is already looking forward to next season.
