
Mustangs Play No. 9 Pepperdine to Draw

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team played the No. 9 team in the nation, Pepperdine, to a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods. The Mustangs surrendered a late goal to allow Pepperdine to tie the game and neither team was able to score in the overtime periods.
With tie Cal Poly's record stands at 6-3-1 while Pepperdine is 7-0-3.
Both teams had opportunities in the first period with Pepperdine firing eight shots. One of their best opportunities came in just the seventh minute of play when Lynn Williams had Cal Poly goalie Brooke Gauvin one on one only to Gauvin make a diving save to her left.
Cal Poly's best opportunity came in the 13 minute when Sara Lancaster flicked a pass to an open Cristina Farrington behind the defense only to have the ball go just out of reach and to the goalie. The Mustangs had only one shot in the half.
In the second period the Mustangs got on the board in the 62 minute when Julie McKee made a quick pass to Lancaster who drew out the Pepperdine goalie, then flicked a short pass to Jenny Haggarty for an open net goal. For Haggarty it was her first goal of the season.
Pepperdine tie the game up with just 1:40 left in regulation (88:20) when Michelle Manning took a free kick from 23 yards out with Ana Pontes taking a point blank shot and a save from Gauvin.
Michelle Pao gathered the rebound and with a simple pass to Anisa Guajardo picked up her sixth goal of the year.
In the first overtime period Pepperdine took three shots with only one on goal coming from Guajardo.
In the second overtime Cal Poly had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds when Tiffany Gummow fired a shot from 20 yards forcing Pepperdine goalie Roxanne Barker to punch the ball out of play. The overtime ended on a Mustang corner kick.
Overall Pepperdine outshot the Mustangs 22-3 with 11 of the Waves shots coming on goal while Cal Poly had two.
Gauvin made 10 saves on the day for the Mustangs while Barker made one save for Pepperdine.
Pepperdine held a huge advantage in corner kicks, 9-2.
The Mustangs return to the field on Sept. 23 when the team will host Fresno State at 7 pm at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
