
Day Wins Heptathlon, Vessey Second in 800

EUGENE, OR -- Former Cal Poly standout and Olympian Sharon Day won the heptathlon at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, OR on Sunday while former teammate Maggie Vessey placed second in the 800 meter finals.
Day entered the final event, the 800 meters, in second place and posted a time of 2:16.53 scoring 980 points. She passed Chantae McMillan who clocked a time of 2:22.99 and 783 points.
Ryann Krais, who won the 800, finished in second place overall behind Day.
Day posted 6,058 points in winning the heptathlon with Krais second (6,030 points) and McMillan third (6,003 points). Day one leader, Hyleas Fountain, finished a distant sixth with 5,861 points.
Day opened the second day of the competition with a leap of 19-feet, 5.25-inches and 825 points in the long jump. She backed it up with a solid mark in the javelin with a throw of 136-feet, 8 inches and 699 points.
In the women's 800 meter final, Vessey opened her kick with 200 meters to go moving into second place. Vessey finished in a time of 1:58.86, half second behind winner Alysia Montano (1:58.33).
