Cal Poly Shut Out for Fourth Time, Falls to USF 4-0

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Second baseman Jason Mahood belted a two-run home run in the seventh inning, clinching San Francisco's 4-0 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
The Mustangs, playing at USF for the first time since 2001, were shut out for the fourth time this season and falls to 10-14 with the loss while the Dons improve to 13-16.
USF scored single runs in the third and sixth innings before Mahood broke the game open with his second home run of the season. Cal Poly has given up just four home runs all year.
Cal Poly collected five hits, all singles. Senior first baseman J.J. Thompson singled twice to lift his batting average to .313 and junior center fielder Bobby Crocker extended his hitting streak to 10 games, matching his career high, with a bunt single in the third inning.
Cal Poly never had more than one baserunner in an inning until the ninth and only two Mustangs reached third base.
Thompson singled in the second inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third base. He was left stranded there. Cal Poly also put runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth, but Elliot Stewart grounded out to end the game.
Cal Poly starting pitcher Joey Wagman (2-2) (pictured above), a sophomore right-hander, allowed just two runs (one earned) and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Frankie Reed surrendered the two-run home run to Mahood while Tommy Erlin, in his first appearance on the mound this season, pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.
USF used seven pitchers in the midweek game, Elliott Waterman (3-0) getting the win with two scoreless innings of work.
The Dons scored an unearned run in the third inning on two Mustang errors and added another run in the sixth on Tom Barry's sacrifice fly to left field. Mahood's two-run home run in the seventh completed the scoring for USF.
Mahood had two of the Dons' six hits.
Cal Poly resumes Big West Conference play at UC Santa Barbara this weekend.
