
Two Second Half Goals Downs Women's Soccer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team allowed two second half goals in a 2-1 loss to Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference game in Santa Barbara on Friday night.
With the loss the Mustangs conclude the 2011 season with a 9-9-1 overall record and a 3-5-0 mark in conference games while UCSB concludes the season 7-11-2 and 2-6-0 in Big West games.
In a scoreless first half Cal Poly played the aggressor with six shots but 12 fouls while UCSB tallied seven shots and two fouls.
Cal Poly goalie Brooke Gauvin recorded four saves with the UCSB goalie recording three.
Each team was credited with one offside and one corner kick.
In the second half UCSB broke the scoreless game in the 52nd minute when Alyssa Benjamin headed a ball into the back of the net off a quick pass from Katy Roby.
The Guachos made it 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 55th minute when Roby connected after a Cal Poly foul.
The Mustangs cut the lead in half when Sara Lancaster connected on her third goal of the season off a pass from McKenzie Orand in the 60th minute.
The Mustangs made a push in the final 30 minutes of play with eight shots with none connecting.
The Mustangs outshot UCSB 18-15 with 12 coming in the second half while the Mustangs were whistled for 22 fouls compared to just nine for the Guachos.
Cal Poly attempted five corners with four coming in the second half while UCSB had three.
Gauvin took the loss for the Mustangs in goal with six total saves with Makenna Henry earning the win with five saves with Kat Serdio credited with three saves.
