Brandon Lawrence in his first year as an assistant coach for the Cal Poly track & field and cross country teams. He joined the coaching staff in September 2024 and works closely with the distance team while leading the recruiting efforts for the event group.
Lawrence joined the Mustangs after spending two years (2022-24) as an assistant distance coach for the Wake Forest track & field and cross country teams while assisting with director of operation duties for the program. During his tenure with the Demon Deacons, Lawrence helped oversee six All-Americans in track & field and cross country, and in his first fall with the program in 2022 the Wake Forest men’s cross country team won its first Atlantic Coast Conference title in 28 years and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships.
Prior to his time at Wake Forest, Lawrence spent a year at Division II Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas as a graduate assistant for the track & field and cross country programs. He mentored two track All-Americans (800-meter, 10,000-meter), oversaw six school record-breaking performances and coached six USTFCCCA All-Region honorees and two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association conference champions.
Lawrence graduated from Hercules High School in 2013 and served as the head cross country coach and an assistant track coach at his alma mater from 2014-17. He then held the same roles at Monte Vista High School (Danville, CA) from 2018-21. Across the two stops, Lawrence coached six league champions, including one in each distance event (800, 1,600, 3,200, cross country), and four CIF individual section champions.
He ran track and cross country at Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill, CA) before transferring to Division II Holy Names University (Oakland, CA) to finish out his running career.
A native of Hercules, CA, Lawrence earned his master's degree in health and human performance from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, in 2023 and his bachelor's in communication and media studies from Holy Names in 2020.
