SAN LUIS OBISPO. Calif. -- For the fifth consecutive year, the Big West Cross Country Championship takes place at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course on the campus of UC Riverside. This year's event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 27 with the women's 6,000 meters taking place at 8:45 a.m. and the men's 8K at 9:30 a.m.
Cal Poly men's team will be looking for its 12th overall championship led by senior David Cardona who enters the race with the top time in races this season. Cardona was named Big West Male Athlete of .the week when he finished 30th at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 12. Cardona posted a time of 24:07.00 on the 8k course. UC Davis' Trevor Halsted has the second best time of 14:09.20.
Other Mustangs to keep an eye one will be Chris Frias who holds the fourth fastest time in the conference with a mark of 14:13.00 also set at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational. Cal poly as a team placed Cardona and Frias paced the Mustangs to a 30th place finish in the 45 team field. Cal Poly finished ahead of Missouri , ranked 30th, and Dartmouth who was receiving votes. 24 of the 45 teams entered Saturday's race nationally ranked or receiving votes.
Frias was also named Big West Male Athlete of the week with his strong performance at the Pac 12 Preview when he led the Cal Poly men's team to a fourth place finish and a time of 24:45.
On the women's side true freshman Laura Hollander leads the way in both the women's 5K and 6K races. .Hollander opened the 2012 season posting a time of 16:42.12 in the 5,000-meter run in winning the Lagoon Open, which is yet to be broken and winning her first of three Big West Female Athlete of the Week awards. She added her second athlete of the week award when she won the Pac 12 Preview in an impressive 17:02 and leading the team to a sixth place finish.
In her most recent race when she was named her third AOF she posted a record setting. 19:33, in winning the adidas Wisconsin Invitational on the 6k course.
Entering this week the Cal Poly men's team is ranked 10th in the west region, but is the top Big West team with Stanford holding down the top spot. The Cal Poly women's team enter the week ranked 11th in the west region behind UC Daivs at No. 6 and Stanford at No. 1.
For the first time, the Big West Conference will provide free, live streaming video from the Big West Cross Country Championships. From the beginning of the races through the finish lines and on to the awards platform, the live stream will provide new access to the championships for fans.
The broadcast will be available on the Big West Cross Country Championships page at http://bit.ly/bwtxc beginning at 8:15 a.m. PT on Championship Saturday and will follow the race leaders through the course.
