Volleyball Swept by UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.  – The Cal Poly volleyball team was swept in three sets in a Big West Conference match on Friday in Irvine. Set scores went 28-26, 25-22 and 25-21.

With the loss Cal Poly falls to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in conference matches while UCI improves to 6-9 and 1-3. 

Cal Poly outhit UCI .167 to .154 and had more digs, 68-60, but UCI held an 8-0 advantage in aces.

Junior Jennifer Keddy led the team with 15 kills on 41 swings while sophomore Krisina Graven added 13 kills. Catie Smith had four kills in the loss. 

Senior Lauren Law led the team with 16 digs while Graven recorded a double-double with 14. Keddy was credited with a double-double with 12 digs while Smith added 10.

In the first set Cal Poly took a 10-18 advantage on a kill by Molly Pon, but UCI fought back to tie the set at 20-20 when the Mustangs took a 22-20 advantage on a pair of errors by UCI. 

UCI tied up the set on a serving error and a Kill by Shaina Olsen and the teams traded points until Keddy put away a kill to give the Mustangs a 24-23 advantage.

The Mustangs gave the point back on a kill Olsen and took the advantage on an ace by Pauline Acres to give the Anteaters a 25-24 advantage. 

The teams continued to trade points when Megan McConnell put away a kill to tie the set at 25-25. Another back and forth exchange with a kill by Graven tied the set at 26-26 when a kill by Taylor Smith and an ace by Kistin Winkler put closed the set at 28-26.

In the second set the Mustangs advanced out to a 7-4 lead on a kill by Graven before UCI battled back to tie things up at 8-8 on an attack error by Smith and took a took a 9-8 lead on a hitting error by Graven. 

UCI moved out to an 11-8 lead on a Smith kill. UCI led by five (15-10) on a kill by Pualine Acres.

The lead maintained at five (22-17) on a kill by Graven when UCI took a time out.

A kill by kill by Chelsea Hardin and an attack error by Smith combined with a kill by Keddy cut the lead to 22-20. 

The teams continued to trade points until UCI won, 25-22, on a kill by Aly Squires to win the set and go up 2-0.

UCI jumped to a 7-1 lead in the third set on an attack error by Hardin. The Mustangs cut the lead to two at 7-5 on a kill by Graven forcing a UCI timeout.

Cal Poly cut the lead to two (14-12) on a kill by Gravin and to one on a kill by Keddy. 

Cal Poly took control and moved out to a two point advantage, 15-13, on back to back kills by Hardin and Graven.

UCI battled back to take a 17-16 lead on a pair of aces by Alexandra Houser, but the Mustangs came back on an attack error and a kill by Keddy to retake the lead. 

UCI retook the lead on an attack error by Smith and another ace by UCI's Olsen.

Cal Poly battled back to tie the set at 21-21 on a kill by Keddy, but UCI would go on to score the next four points and win the deciding set.
