LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team pushed the No. 21 Long Beach State 49ers to the limit, but it was not enough as LBSU score the final four points in the fifth set to win the five set thriller. Set scores went 25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 25-21 and 16-14.

With the loss the Mustangs fall to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in Big West play while Long Beach State improves to 7-5 and 1-1.

The Mustangs were led by sophomore Kristina Graven's 28 kills. She was backed by junior Jennifer Keddy's 17 and senior Catie Smith's 13.

Sophomore Kate Walters dished out 57 assists in the five set match while Lauren Law recorded a team-high 22 digs. Graven and Smith each added 10.

Cal Ply as a team hit .199 with Keddy earning eight blocks (seven assisted).

Long Beach State was led by D. Aigner-Swesey with 29 kills with Janisa Johnson and Haleigh Hampton adding 16 and 12 respectively.

Erin Juley handed out 57 assists with Johnson leading the team with 17 digs.

Long Beach State hit .218 as a team.

In the first set the Mustangs moved out to a 13-11 lead when Smith pounded a kill on the left side. They maintained a two point advantage (15-13) on an attack error by LBSU's Libby Foutanilla.

LBSU tied the set at 17-17 when Alma Serna recorded a kill and took a 20-18 advantage when Aigner-Swesey tallied a kill.

The 49ers went on to finish off the set 35-22 on a kill by Serna.

In the second set the Mustangs took at 12-9 advantage on a kill by Graven and an attack error by the 49ers. An assisted block by Graven and McConnell made it 13-9.

Long Beach State battled back to tied the set at 17-17 on a kill by  Johnson. The Mustangs regained the lead on a kill by Keddy (19-18) and maintained and expanded the lead on a pair of kills by Graven (21-19).

Graven recorded a kill and an assisted block by McConnell and Chelsea Hardin maintained a two point advantage (23-21).

A kill by McConnell (24-22) put the Mustangs at set point, but a pair of points by the 49ers tied the set at 24-24. But a pair of points by the Mustangs one on a kill by Catie Smith sealed the set at 26-24 behind six kills by Graven and 12 assists from Walters.

In the third set LBSU moved out to a 10-6 lead on a kill by Swesey Aigner, but the Mustangs cut it 10-7 on a kill by Hardin.

The Mustangs battled back and tied the score at 13-13 on a kill by Keddy.

An assisted block by Keddy and Smith kept the score within one at 19-18. The Mustangs took a four point advantage (23-19)on a kill by Keddy then Smith and an assisted block by Smith and Keddy.

Cal Poly finished things off behind kills by Keddy and Graven for a 25-21 win.

The set was powered for the Mustangs by Keddy with five kills and five blocks while Smith tallied three kills and four blocks.

In the fourth began with the teams trading points until Cal Poly called timeout at 7-7. LBSU came out of the break scoring the next six points and holding a 13-7 lead.

LBSU maintained the lead and made it 21-11 on a kill by Serna.

Cal Poly fought back, winning six of the next seven points to cut the lead 22-17 on a kill by Graven.

Long Beach State finished off the fourth set 25-21.

The 49ers opened a 4-2 advantage in the deciding set when McConnell recorded a kill and a block by Hardin and McConnell tied it at 4-4.

That was followed up by a kill by Graven and pair of kills by Smith giving the Mustangs a 7-4 advantage and forcing a Long Beach timeout.

The teams battled with LBSU tying the game at 11-11 on a kill by Aigner-Swesey when Graven responded with a kill of her own and a 12-11 lead for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly took it to match point, 14-12, on a kill by Smith forcing a Long Beach State timeout.

Out of the LBSU timeout the 49ers scored the next four points, capped by a hitting error by McConnell to win the set and the match.
