Cal Poly Women’s Soccer Loses to No. 17 BYU, 5-1.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- Cal Poly Women's Soccer traveled to Provo, Utah where they lost to No. 17 BYU, 5-1.

Less than five minutes into the match, Cal Poly scored first when Cici Kobinski caught the BYU goalie out of position to score off an assist from Elise Krieghoff.  

Freshman Alyssa Giannetti made some great saves tipping the ball, but she would give up three goals before the first half came to a close.  The first came from Michele Murphy who found the top of the net off an assist from Rachel Manning.  BYU would score again when Carlee Payne Holmoe scored on a penalty kick.  The Cougars' final goal of the half came as Jaiden Thornock faced goalie Alyssa Giannetti one on one and beat her to score in an open net.

In the second half, it was pretty even play until the 77th minute.  Dana Oldroyd Cusick kicked the ball in setting up the header goal from Lindsi Cutshall with an added assist from Michele Murphy.  Finally in the 88th minute, left footer Marissa Nimmer found the back left corner of net to score her first goal of the season.

Cal Poly took 10 shots, and four on goal to BYU's 31 shots and 16 on goal. Alyssa Giannetti made 11 saves with Byu's Erica Owens making three saves on the night.

Cal Poly next travels to face Fresno State on Sept. 23 for 1 pm game.
