Cal Poly Women's Basketball to Host CS Northridge, Hawai'i this Week

This Week:  The Mustangs will host Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i this week in Big West Conference games. Cal Poly will play the Matadors on Thursday at 7 pm while the game with Hawai'i begins at 4 pm on Saturday. Both games will be available on the internet at GoPoly.com with the broadcast times set for 6:40 pm and 3:40 pm with Dave Grant calling the play by play.

What's coming up: Following the game with Hawai'i the Mustangs return to the road to play UC Riverside (Feb. 28) and Cal State Fullerton (March 2). UC Riverside entered the week 11-12 overall and 4-8 in Big West games while the Titans entered the week 7-17 overall and 3-9 in Big West contests.

Big West Conference Tournament: Just a reminder that the Big West Conference Women's Basketball Tournament will open on March 12th at the Bren Center on the campus of UC Irvine. Tournament play will continue on March 13 when as the highest remaining seeds (No. 3 through No. 8 seeds) will advance to the Honda Center in Anaheim to face the top two seeds on Friday, March 15 with the championship to follow on March 16.

Cal State Northridge Notes: The Matadors enter the game with the Mustangs 13-12 overall and 7-6 overall after falling to Pacific (74-56) and defeating UC Davis (51-49) last week. Ashlee Guay leads the team in scoring with 13.4 points per game. Marta Masoni adds 12.4 points. Camille Mahlknecht is the team's leading rebounder with 7.9 boards per game. She is also the team's leading shotblocker with 60 for the season. Guay leads the team with 102 assists. CSUN opened the conference season 4-0, but has gone 3-7 since.

History with the Matadors: Cal State Northridge holds a 35-31 advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series including an 80-70 double overtime win in Northridge on Jan. 26. Last season the teams split the two meetings with each team winning on its home court.

Hawai'i Notes: The Wahine entered the week with a 9-7 conference record and 13-11 overall after defeating UC Davis (59-48) and Pacific (74-71 ot) this past week. UH has won four of its last five games with the team's conference losses coming against Cal State Fullerton (83-74), Pacific (71-61), UCSB (51-50) and UC Irvine (64-52). Hawai'i is led by Kamilah Martin with 15.3 points and 10 rebounds per game with Ashleigh Karaitiana adds 9.1 points with 4.7 rebounds.   

History with Hawai'i: Cal Poly and Hawai'i have met only four times in the schools history with Hawai'i winning all four. The teams first met in 1978 and until this season had not played since 1982. Hawai'i defeated the Mustangs, 61-43, on Jan. 24.  

A Little About the Mustangs.....:  
• The Mustangs are coming off back-to-back Big West Regular Season Championships posting a 12-4 conference record both seasons.  

• The Mustangs won 17 games last season, one off pervious year (18) that tied for second-best in school history since making the move to Division I in the 1994-95 season. Cal Poly posted a Division I best 21 wins during the 2008-09 season when the team went 21-11. During the 2009-10 season, head coach Faith Mimnaugh's squad recorded 18 wins... Overall in women's basketball history (since 1974-75), the team posted a 21-12 record in the 1981-82 season and 18-11 in 1979-80 when the team was competing at the Division II level.

• The Mustangs have claimed the last three Big West Conference Player of the year awards with Kristina Santiago winning twice (2011-12 and 2009-10) and Rachel Clancy winning in 2010-11.

• The Mustangs have advanced to the post season the last two seasons, both in the WNIT. In 2011 the Mustangs hosted California and lost 74-60 while in the 2012 season Cal Poly traveled to Seattle and lost to Washington, 90-71.

• Cal Poly head coach Faith Mimnaugh picked up her 200 career win at Cal Poly with the team's 72-63 win at Nevada. She is already has the most wins as a coach in program history, amassing 204 wins to this point in 15-plus seasons.

Ervin, Back Where She Belongs....: In the win over UC Santa Barbara one week ago, junior Jonae Ervin dished out 11 assists for the second time in her career, but this time without a turnover. With the stellar performance against the Gauchos, she vaulted to the No. 1 spot in the NCAA with a 3.81 assist/turnover ratio. She was the NCAA  leader last season with  a ratio of 2.67. The UCSB game was the third game in her career with 10 or more assists in a game.

Schlemer Does it Again... :  Junior Molly Schlemer's 18 points and 13 rebounds tallied a double-double in the win over UC Santa Barbara and it was her 10th in 11 games scoring in double figures. Since conference started, Schlemer leads the Mustangs in scoring 14.8 points per game and has grabbed 7.1 rebounds per contest. She is shooting a remarkable 59 percent from the floor, making 77 of 130 field goals. Overall she averages 11.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while hitting 55 percent of her shots from the floor...

Home Sweet Home.... : The Mustangs are a remarkable 9-3 in home games this season and have won their last six dating back to Loyola Marymount win on Dec. 20..... That means that Cal Poly has gone undefeated (5-0) in Big West games at home...

Nikol Allison....: Academic senior, Nikol Allison, likes home cooking... The native of Davis and a graduate of Davis High School enjoyed playing in front her family when she scored a career-high 22 points in the game with UCD... She hit nine of 15 shots from the floor and gathered seven rebounds... Two days earlier, against Pacific, she scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.. In the two games she averaged 16 points and eight rebounds while shooting 67 percent from the floor... All off the bench.... Against UCSB she scored eight points with four rebounds...

What's Happening in the Big West:  For the second week in a row the Big West will feature matchups that post the top two teams against one another... Last week it was Pacific and Hawai'i along with Cal Poly and UCSB.... This week it will be Cal Poly against Hawai'i....

50 Percent: For the fist time this season the Mustangs shot better then 50 percent from the floor in the game with Cal State Fullerton..Cal Poly shot 48 percent in the first half and led Cal Sate Fullerton, 33-24 at the break... In the second half the Mustangs put up 45 points and shot 66 percent from the floor ... The team shot 57 percent overall for the game....

An Assists or Two...:  The Mustangs are ranked 18th in the nation and leads the Big West Conference with 16.6 assists per game. Four players have dished out more then 40 assists this season, led by Jonae Ervin with 89 assists while Kayla Griffin is second on the team with 80 followed by Ariana Elegado with 72. Caroline Reeves has dished out 52. Ervin has amassed her total in just 19 games.

Playing the Best... : Cal Poly opened the 2012-13 season playing two teams ranked in the top 25. The Mustangs opened the season with No. 24 Oklahoma State, falling 90-59. Then came back after a pair of wins to play No. 12 California (87-61). .. The are now No. 22 and No. 6 respectively..

RPI.... : . The Mustangs are ranked 91st this week in the NCAA RPI... ... Last week 94th, 109th and 105th the previous weeks...

Schlemer's Career Night:  Junior Molly Schlemer, who established a career high in scoring in Cal Poly's historic triple-overtime win over Pacific, was named the Big West Player of the Week. Schlemer averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds in two Big West Conference games at home last week. In the 73-71 win over UC Davis on Thursday, Schlemer came off the bench to spark Cal Poly with 12 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes of play when she hit five of seven shots from the floor. Two days later, Schlemer scored a career-high 28 points when she converted 13 of 17 shots from the floor as Cal Poly beat Pacific 96-95 in the Mustangs' first-ever triple-overtime game. She backed up her career night with a 22 point game against UCSB when she made 11 of 15 shots from the floor with eight rebounds..
