SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 69-50 win over the University San Diego on Saturday afternoon in Mott Gym. San Diego falls to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs return to the court on Monday when they travel to No. 12 California for a game at 5pm.
Senior Kayla Griffin led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds while senior Nikol Allison came off the bench to add 11 points. Griffin's points came when she hit seven of 15 shots from the floor with Allison hitting five of seven. Senior Ashley Cascio came off the bench to lead the team with five assists while adding six points. Senior Brittany Woodard scored nine points with six rebounds.
Alysse Barlow led USD with 10 points with Amy Kame and Maya Hood each adding nine. Klara Wischer and Kame each had eight rebounds to lead the team.
Cal Poly shot 45 percent from the floor and hit 42 percent from long range while limiting USD to just 36 percent from the floor and 0-6 from long range. Cal Poly outrebounded USD, 41-40, but managed 15 steals and forcing 26 turnovers.
Cal Poly broke open a 6-6 game (15:20) with an 8-0 run capped by a jumper by Griffin. The Mustangs made it an 11 point lead (21-10) when Woodard connected on a three with 9:08 left in the half. Cal Poly held its largest lead of the half (37-20) with 1:22 when Allison made a layup. Cal Poly went into the break holding a 37-22 lead.
USD opened the second half and closed the lead to 12 (40-28) with 16:47 left in the game. The Mustangs responded and soon made it a 20 point lead (52-32) with 10:49 left on a layup by Taryn Garza.
USD would close the gap to 15 with 7:21 left on a layup by Hood and cut the lead to 13 with 3:42 remaining on a layup by Kame. But the Mustangs would not let up and built the lead back to 20 late in the game and settled for a 69-50 win.
