Cal Poly Softball Falls in Mustang Classic Finale against UNLV

MUSTANG CLASSIC TOURNAMENT PAGE

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Mustang softball freshman lefthander Chloe Wurst (above) tossed six and one-third innings without allowing a walk on Sunday afternoon, but UNLV swatted a pair of solo home runs at Bob Janssen Field as the Cal Poly softball team fell in the finale of the Mustang Classic against the Rebels, 4-1.

Wurst (2-9) held the Rebels (17-14) to one hit during the opening four innings until UNLV left fielder Pauline Monreal led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle. After advancing to second base on a passed ball from Mustang sophomore catcher Mariah Cochiolo and third following a sacrifice bunt by Rebel first baseman Korin Cuico, Monreal plated the game's opening run on a Stefany Valentino sacrifice fly.

UNLV third baseman Jaexie Balilea then doubled the Rebel lead by homering to lead off the sixth.

Cal Poly (7-18) halved UNLV's lead during the bottom half of the sixth as sophomore shortstop Kim Westlund fouled off four-successive pitches with two outs before singling home senior left fielder Nora Sobczak.

UNLV, however, returned during the top of the seventh to post a pair of runs as Cuico reached home on a Wurst wild pitch before catcher Heather Harrison cemented the final scoreline with a solo homer to left field.
