Mustangs Get Road Victory Over Utah State Wednesday, 4-3

LOGAN, UT — Redshirt freshman Daly Meinert (pictured) had the match-clinching point in the third-set tiebreaker as the Cal Poly men's tennis program took down Utah State on Wednesday, 4-3.

The match began with the Aggies (13-7) taking the doubles point after wins on courts one and three. The Mustangs' (8-6) No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Antoine Noel and freshman Gary Vardanyan did win their match, 6-3 for their fifth straight win and improved their record as a pair to a team-best 5-1.

In singles, Cal Poly quickly tied the score after a 6-1, 7-5 victory by Noel at the No. 2 position. He improves his record this season to 8-3.

After Utah State regained the lead at 2-1, sophomore Alex Stater, who Wednesday was named this week's Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career, won his match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (1). The win is Stater's seventh in a row and improves his record to a team-best 10-3.

With the Mustangs trailing 3-2, senior Josh Ortlip once again tied the score after he picked up a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. He is now 8-5 on the season.

The match then came down to court six. Meinert dropped the first set, only to win the second as well as the third in a tiebreaker to earn the victory. He won by set scores of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (4) on the way to his first singles dual match win of his career.

Cal Poly improves its road record to 2-3 with the win. The Mustangs now return home to face UC Irvine (10-4) on Saturday at noon from Mustang Tennis Complex. The Mustangs have won the last three meetings against the Anteaters.
