SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly produced 16 hits and eight of the nine Mustang starters collected at least one hit in a 9-0 victory over Pacific in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader inside Baggett Stadium.
Samuelson started the run production with his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to left field in the second inning. That was the start of back-to-back three-run rallies for Cal Poly and the Mustangs added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Senior left-hander Trent Shelton (1-1) (pictured above) struck out a career-high 10 Pacific batters without allowing a walk, scattering six singles over seven innings for the victory. Matt Arens, a freshman southpaw, and freshman right-hander Dylan Villalobos each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Tyler Ryan and Lucas Halstead each had two singles for Pacific.
Cal Poly, which had committed 16 errors in its first nine games, played errorless defense for the second time this season.
The second game of the doubleheader will start at 4:15 p.m.
