Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Lea Ungar
Lea Ungar, Defensive Specialist, 5-6, Sophomore, Manhattan Beach, CA | Mira Costa High School
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After recording a career-high 14 digs to help the Cal Poly volleyball team sweep No. 19 Hawai’i for the first time in program history last week, sophomore defensive specialist Lea Ungar has been named both the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week and the Big West Defensive Player of the Week.
Ungar played stellar defense on her way to a match- and career-high 14 digs. She made several point-saving, diving digs, one of which saved the Mustangs from dropping the second set and ensured a 26-24 victory.
In addition to her 14 digs, she also added two service aces and two assists. For the season, Ungar is now averaging 2.37 digs per set, good for second-most on the team.
For Ungar, this is both her first Big West Defensive Player of the Week and Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week honor.
With last week’s win, Cal Poly remains undefeated and in sole possession of first place in the Big West at 6-0. It also extended the nation’s longest active home winning streak to 28 consecutive matches.
The Mustangs hit the road for one match this week as they take on their rival and second-place UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
