Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Brooke Tjerrild
Brooke Tjerrild, Pole Vault, Junior, Fresno, Calif.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After breaking a school record which had stood for 20 years, Mustang junior pole vaulter Brooke Tjerrild was named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Tjerrild won the pole vault at Boise State’s indoor Bronco Invitational on Saturday, clearing 13 feet, 8.5 inches, to move ahead of the previous program record set by former NCAA Indoor All-American Paula Serrano at 13’ 7.25” in 2000.
Her height achieved in Nampa, Idaho, ranks No. 11 in the country so far on the young indoor season, which as of this week would be a qualifier for the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque in mid-March (as the top 16 per event advance to Indoor Nationals).
Tjerrild needed only one attempt to clear the record height, besting Gabrielle Palmer of Nevada and Emily Coombs of Washington State.
Up next, Cal Poly continues the indoor season at the UW Invitational in Seattle, hosted inside the Huskies’ Dempsey Stadium from Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
