Mechanics Bank Student-Athletes of the Week: Sonny and Lombard
Emily Sonny (Senior, Arroyo Grande, CA) and Jayelin Lombard (Sophomore, Indio, CA)
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After winning both of their matches over top-10 opponents to help the Cal Poly beach volleyball team go 2-0 at last weekend’s Center of Effort Beach Volleyball Challenge, the Mustangs’ No. 3 duo of senior Emily Sonny and sophomore Jayelin Lombard have been named both the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week and the Big West Pairs Team of the Week.
Sonny and Lombard won both of their matches at the No. 3 spot in the lineup to help Cal Poly take down No. 6 Pepperdine and No. 9 Loyola Marymount in what was the first matches held at the Mustang Beach Volleyball Complex.
Against No. 6 Pepperdine, Sonny and Lombard had the win that clinched the dual over the Waves. After dropping the first set, they came back to win the second and third to seal Cal Poly’s first win over a fellow top-10 team this year.

In the second match of the evening against the No. 9 Lions, the tandem won their match in straight sets to help the Mustangs defeat LMU 3-2 and get their second win over a top 10 team.
They are now 5-1 as a pair this season which is tied for the best record on the team.
They also helped push Cal Poly’s record to 4-2 this season as the Mustangs, ranked No. 8 last week and No. 6 this week, get ready to head to Arizona this weekend for four matches.
