Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Emmanuel Perez
Emmanuel Perez, Midfielder, Junior, Boynton Beach, Fla. | Philadelphia Union Academy
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After recording his second career two-goal game during the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s 3-1 home victory against Gonzaga (Sept. 15) and scoring the initial goal in the program’s 3-0 win against Fresno Pacific (Sept. 11), junior midfielder Emmanuel Perez was named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Held without a shot during Cal Poly’s opening two matches, Perez produced the eventual game-winning goal with his first attempt against Fresno Pacific in the 12th minute. Perez then assisted on graduate forward Spencer Held’s 65th-minute strike that provided Cal Poly the final 3-0 margin of victory versus the Sunbirds.
Four days later versus Gonzaga, Perez scored in the 26th and 57th minutes to propel Cal Poly’s 3-1 win. He led all players with five shot attempts, four of which landed on frame.
The two-goal game was Perez’s first since scoring twice during a 4-1 home win against Fresno Pacific to open the 2018 season.
Perez, who placed five of his seven shot attempts last week on target, leads Cal Poly and ranks fifth among Big West Conference players with three goals.
As a team, Cal Poly (2-2-0) continues a five-match home stand when hosting NAIA Westmont inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
