Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Malek Harwell

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After leading the Cal Poly men’s basketball program in scoring during the opening two Big West games and helping the Mustangs to their first conference victory, graduate guard Malek Harwell has been named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
During Cal Poly’s Big West opener against UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 8), Harwell scored 11 points. Three nights later during a 74-56 home victory against CSUN, Harwell added 10 points to record his seventh double-digit scoring game of the season.
For the two games, Harwell led Cal Poly with 10.5 points per evening and shot 88.9 (8-for-9) percent from the free throw line.
Harwell now ranks second among Big West players with an 89.2 percent free throw mark and second in Cal Poly’s lineup with 8.9 points per game.
As a team, Cal Poly opens a three-game road trip on Thursday, Jan. 16, against Hawai’i. Tip time from the Stan Sheriff Center on O’ahu is 9 p.m. PT.
