Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Abbey Ellis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After averaging a team-high 25.0 points on 65.4-percent shooting while helping the Mustang women’s basketball squad to a 2-0 mark at the Big West Conference Tournament, point guard Abbey Ellis was named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Ellis, a freshman from Yallambie, Australia, made a combined 17 of 26 shot attempts during the two victories at LBSU’s Walter Pyramid, including 8 of 14 from 3-point range, while adding an 8-for-10 tournament at the free-throw line.
She also averaged 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in Long Beach, where eighth-seeded Cal Poly opened with a 59-48 first-round win over hosting No. 5 seed LBSU on Tuesday before following up with a 70-49 quarterfinals victory over third-seeded UC Irvine on Wednesday on ESPN3.
The Mustangs were set to face top-seeded UC Davis in Friday’s semifinals at the Honda Center in Anaheim before the entirety of the tournament and college sports around the country were called off due to health concerns in regards to the coronavirus pandemic.
Cal Poly (11-18) finished the year with five wins in its last seven games. Ellis, a Big West All-Freshman selection for 2020, ends the season No. 39 nationally in free-throw accuracy (.839) and 13th in the country among freshmen for scoring (averaging 15.6 points).
