THIS WEEK IN MUSTANG ATHLETICS
- As one of only four undefeated Big Sky programs after two weekends of conference play, Cal Poly football seeks its first 3-0 Big Sky start in 14 seasons when hosting Weber State at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 3.
- Following a Blue-Green comeback victory, Cal Poly men's soccer opens its inaugural Pac-12 Conference season, first visiting UC Santa Diego on Wednesday before hosting California Baptist on Sunday.
- After going unbeaten at home this past week to open conference play, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team heads to Southern California for its first two Big West road matches.
- Fresh off sweeping the Big West Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards, the Cal Poly cross country program travels north to take part in the Pacific Invitational on Friday.
- Cal Poly volleyball will look to keep its conference momentum going next weekend, hitting the road against a pair of new Big West opponents, first with Sacramento State on Thursday before visiting Utah Valley on Saturday.
- The Cal Poly women’s tennis team continues its fall season when they compete in the Big West Fall Selection hosted by UC San Diego this Thursday through Sunday.
- Turning in the third-lowest tournament score in program history, men's golf freshman Frederick Egnatios split the Windon Memorial individual title at Northwestern’s Sept. 28-29. Egnatios recorded an eight-under 202 and the closed the tournament with birdies on four of his final five holes. Cal Poly resumes action at the Oct. 19-21 Saint Mary’s Invitational.

- Cal Poly seeks its first 3-0 Big Sky Conference start in 14 seasons when hosting Weber State on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
- With a 31-27 win at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26), Cal Poly remains one of only four undefeated Big Sky programs after two weekends of conference play.
- Linebacker Mikey D’Amato remains among the nation’s best with the senior ranked second nationally for total tackles (60) and tackles per game (12.0). With a career best 16 tackles at Eastern Washington, fellow linebacker Kenny Olson is sixth among FCS players with 52 total tackles.
- Jaden Green’s 269-yard rushing effort at Eastern Washington – the second highest single game total in program history – now places him eighth among FCS players at 122.4 yards per game.
- Cal Poly opens its inaugural Pac-12 Conference season when visiting UC Santa Diego on Wednesday, Sept. 30 (7 p.m.) and hosting California Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 4 (3 p.m.). Both matches stream on ESPN+.
- Following Friday’s 2-1 come-from-behind home victory against Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly swept Pac-12 honors with goalkeeper Mathew Guerra named Defensive Player of the Week (six saves), Charlie Hogan selected as Offensive Player of the Week (equalizing goal) and Devin Bening earning Newcomer of the Week (game-winning goal).
- Cal Poly is 4-2 all time against UC San Diego, including a win in the 2025 Big West tournament. The home team has won all five regular season matchups. Cal Baptist won the only matchup between the Lancers and the Mustangs with a 2-0 victory in 2025.
- Collecting four points at home last week puts the Mustangs in a six-way tie for first place in the Big West as the calendar flips to October.
- Cal Poly (4-3-3, 1-0-1 BW) hits the road this week for matchups at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday and UC San Diego on Saturday. Both matches kick off at 6 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN+. Links to watch can be found HERE.
- The Mustangs opened Big West play last Wednesday at Spanos by defeating previously unbeaten California Baptist in the first ever conference match between the two programs. Sam Liaty scored a goal in the 69th minute to power the Mustangs to victory.
- Cal Poly ended the week by earning a 1-1 draw against high-powered Long Beach State on Saturday.
- Freshman Madison Lujan earned Big West Rookie of the Week honors for the first time after scoring the opening goal in the win over CBU.
- Cal Poly leads the all-time series with CSUF 19-13-6, defeating the Titans 1-0 in the Big West Championship semifinals last season en route to capturing its fourth Big West tournament title in program history and first since 2004.
- Last year, the Mustangs defeated UC San Diego 2-0 in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly leads the all-time series 3-2-0.
- Cal State Fullerton (4-2-4) and UC San Diego (5-2-3) sit atop the conference standings through two matches as well with 4 points each.
- Junior Miah Thomas, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, is responsible for five of the team’s 12 goals this season. Her five goals are tied for third most in the Big West.
- 29 players have seen the field for the Mustangs this season with six starting in all 10 matches — senior Siena Urzua, juniors Miah Thomas, Mya Clarke and Shannon Porubski, sophomore Sam Walker and freshman Kate Nunes.
- After opening with two victories at home to start the 2026 Big West season, Cal Poly volleyball will travel outside the state for the last time in the regular season. But not to the islands of Hawai'i.
- The Mustangs open by heading to the state capital Sacramento on Thursday at 7 p.m. before heading to Orem, Utah on Satruday at noon to take on Utah Valley. Both matches can be streamed on ESPN+. Links to streams and live stats for those matches can be found HERE.
- Cal Poly is 13-6 against Sacramento State all time in Division-I as the Hornets are currently riding a six-match winning streak heading into their first Big West duel. The Mustangs are 3-3 against Utah Valley, but have failed to pick up a win in Orem thus far.
- With the victory against CSUN on Saturday, head coach Caroline Walters tied Steve Schlick’s program record 84 career Big West victories. She is also five from tying and six from passing Mike Wilton for most overall wins by a Mustang indoor volleyball head coach.
- Alexis Haury was effective in setting up the Mustang attack and contributing to the defense, with a pair of double-doubles over the weekend. Haury totaled 70 assists and 22 digs with four aces. Haury not only paces the Big West with a 9.87 A/S but is 56th individually in Division I volleyball and has helped Cal Poly sit 26th with its 0.274 team hitting percentage.
- The men’s and women’s teams travel to Lodi on Friday to race in the Pacific Invitational at Micke Grove Golf Course. The men’s 8K starts at 4 p.m. followed by the women’s 6K at 5 p.m. You can follow the live results HERE.
- The Mustangs swept this week’s Big West weekly awards as Tatiana Cornejo was crowned the Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week while Dheeraj Gurusamy won the award on the men’s side.
- Cornejo had a sensational showing at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational this past week, crossing the finish line in third in the women’s 6K race with a blistering time of 19:16.8 — an over 40-second lifetime best.
- Fresh off hosting its second fall tournament in program history, Cal Poly heads to La Jolla this Thursday through Sunday to take part in the Big West Fall Selection.
- During the Cal Poly Invitational this past Friday through Sunday, the Mustangs 12-6 in singles play and 6-3 in doubles while battling some stiff competition from Gonzaga, Fresno State and Saint Mary’s in hidden duals.
- Junior Jessica MacCallum and freshman Kaia Celin Bostroem Joergensen led the way going unbeaten in singles play. Read the full recap HERE.
