This Week in Mustang Athletics
- Cal Poly women’s soccer returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host a pair of pivotal matches to open Big West play. The Mustangs take on unbeaten Cal Baptist on Wednesday and Long Beach State on Saturday, with both matches kicking off at 6 p.m.
- The Greatest Rivalry in College Soccer returns to Mustang Memorial Field as men's soccer hosts UC Santa Barbara in San Luis Obispo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, with fans receiving light up rally towels courtesy of Valencia Apartments.
- Mustang women’s tennis officially gets the fall portion of its 2026-27 season underway this Friday through Sunday when they host the Cal Poly Invitational at the Ronca Tennis Center.
- Cal Poly volleyball will look to snap its three-match skid as Big West play begins next weekend when the Mustangs host Cal State Bakersfield (Friday, 6 p.m.) and CSUN (Saturday, 4 p.m.).
- The Big Sky conference schedule picks up again for Cal Poly as they travel to Cheney, Washington to take on the Eastern Washington Eagles on Saturday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
- The Cal Poly cross country program is back in action, traveling to Chicago on Friday to compete in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational.
- Jovan Lubbe opened the men's tennis season with a Round of 256 victory at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa last weekend. Now, at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Westlake Village from September 25-27, four more individual Mustangs will begin their seasons.
- Maddy Saysanasongkham and women's golf wrapped up their second tourney on Tuesday, placing seventh as a team at the Connell Ram Classic in Fort Collins as the sophomore headliner tied for seventh, shooting two eagles and an opening-round 69 in the process.
- Cal Poly men's and women's basketball kicked off their first practices of the 2026-27 season on Monday. Both teams host their season-opening exhibitions at Mott Athletics Center with the women welcoming Cal State San Marcos (October 21, 6 p.m.) before the men face Westmont (October 23, 11 a.m.).

- After wrapping up non-conference play this past Saturday in Seattle, the Mustangs return to Spanos Stadium for the first time since Aug. 27 to host California Baptist and Long Beach State to open Big West play. Cal Poly (3-3-2) takes on CBU first at 6 p.m. Wednesday before wrapping up the week with an Alumni Weekend and Latino Heritage Night showdown with Long Beach State at 6 p.m. Saturday.

- California Baptist, a new member of the Big West, enters Wednesday’s match as the only remaining team in Division I to not allow a goal this season. The Lancers are 5-0-1 this season and last year won the Western Athletic Conference tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Kansas 3-1 in the First Round.
- The Beach are 6-1-2 this season, their best start through nine matches in program history. The Mustangs lead the all-time series with LBSU 14-10-7 and last year earned a 1-0 victory in Long Beach.
- Junior Miah Thomas, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, is responsible for half of the team’s eight goals this season, burying four. In total, 29 players have seen the field for the Mustangs this season with six starting in all seven matches — senior Siena Urzua, juniors Miah Thomas, Mya Clarke and Shannon Porubski, sophomore Sam Walker and freshman Kate Nunes.
- Cal Poly hosts UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 25 in the opening game of the 2026 Blue-Green rivalry series. Another capacity crowd at Mustang Memorial Field is expected for a series that has drawn 36 of the top 78 best-attended regular season matches in NCAA history.

- With his first career two-goal game during Cal Poly’s Sept. 16 matchup with Cal State Bakersfield, Colin Pearce now leads the Mustangs and ranks third among Pac-12 players with three goals.
- Cal Poly starts conference play with two more home matches against Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (4 p.m.) at Mott Athletics Center where, in spite of their overall win streak snapped, the Mustangs still remain unbeaten in conference play since 2024. - The Mustangs were unable to pick up a win in their three SLO Classic matchups, which saw them face two top 15 teams in No. 8 Stanford and No.12 Arizona State, though they pushed the Sun Devils to a near-comeback five setter.
- Setter Alexis Haury tallied 125 assists in the three contests including a 59 assist opener against Santa Clara, a new collegiate high for Haury, while outside hitter Emma Fredrick picked up 53 kills across the tournament, highlighted by her own career-best 26 kills against the Broncos.
- After winning its opening Big Sky matchup – a 38-34 home victory against Idaho (Aug. 28) – Cal Poly resumes conference play Saturday, Sept. 26 at Eastern Washington. Watch HERE.
- Kickoff is 4 p.m. on ESPN+ for the Mustangs, who seek their first all-time victory at Roos Field in their eighth trip.
- Senior linebacker Mikey D’Amato – a preseason Buck Buchanan Award Watch List selection for national FCS defensive player of the year – leads the nation with 48 total tackles and 12.0 tackles per game.
- Junior running back Jaden Green now ranks third among Big Sky rushers at 85.8 yards per game after recording a Cal Poly best 126 yards against San Diego (Sept. 19). Quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr., meanwhile, is fourth among FCS players with 11 passing touchdowns.
- In the NFL, former Mustang defensive lineman Elijah Ponder scored the first touchdown by a Cal Poly alum since 2008. He pounced on a fumble by Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and ran 19 yards to paydirt. Fellow defensive lineman Chris Gocong also scooped up a fumble as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles against the Dallas Cowboys in 2008, while the last offensive Cal Poly alumni to score was wideout Chris Thomas on Sept. 30, 2001.
- The Mustangs host the Cal Poly Invitational this Friday through Sunday at the Ronca Tennis Center to officially kickoff the fall portion of their season. Play starts at 9 a.m. each day during the three-day tournament with doubles, with singles action to follow. Play should wrap around 4 p.m. each day.
- Admission to the tournament is free. Fresno State, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s are the other three teams competing in the tournament.
- Cal Poly returns seven players from last year’s team that advanced to the Big West Championship match for a program record sixth consecutive year — Candela Aparisi, Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako, Aspen Chung, Amy Leather, Natalie Lynch, Jessica MacCallum, Olivia Mlouk.
- Jovan Lubbe turned in a gritty two-match performance at last week's ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa, highlighted by a come-from-behind three-set victory before falling to No. 8 seed in the tourney, Texas A&M's Kriish Tyagi.
- This weekend, from September 25-27, Head Coach Nick Carless will travel with four Mustangs in tow to Westlake Villa, Calif. for the Sherwood Collegiate Cup: Senior Raz Haviv and sophomore Leo Matthysen, both returning top-6 players from last season, as well as newcomers Ernst Gouws (Liberty transfer) and Evan Simon (5-star ranked freshman).
- Last season at this same event, the team was represented by Jovan Lubbe, Raz Haviv, Jack Cross, Sean Kamyshev, Denzel Seetso, and now-volunteer coach Luc Hoeijmans, as the Mustangs put together a 14-8 singles run which included victories over multiple opponents from top-40 ranked programs.
- The men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to take part in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational for the third consecutive year Friday at Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago.
- Action starts at 7 AM PDT Friday with the women’s 6K followed by the men’s 8K at 7:40 AM PDT.

- Cal Poly opened its season three weeks ago at the Gaucho Twilight hosted by UC Santa Barbara, sweeping the team and individual titles at the meet as Tatiana Cornejo (women’s) and Dheeraj Gurusamy (men’s) both finished first in their respective races.
