
No. 6 Mustangs Split Friday at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball split its two matches up at Stanford Friday. The No. 6 Mustangs (24-8) swept San Jose State 5-0 before coming up just short against No. 2 Stanford, 3-2.
Against the Spartans, Cal Poly won at all five spots in straight sets. It was Ella Connor/Erin Inskeep winning at the No. 1 spot, Logan Walter/Izzy Martinez at the No. 2 spot, Peyton Dueck/Quinn Perry at the No. 3 spot, Julia Westby/Elise Lenahan at the No. 4 spot, and Hannah Byers/Maddy Byrne at the No. 5 spot.
The sweep over San Jose State marked the Mustangs’ 20th 5-0 victory of the season.
Later, the Mustangs had another tight battle with the No. 2 Cardinal for the third time this season. Stanford started off with a win at the No. 2 spot before Cal Poly answered back with a three-set win at the No. 4 spot by Westby and Lenahan.
The Mustangs then took a 2-1 lead after an impressive 25-23, 21-9 straight set win at the No. 1 spot by Connor and Inskeep. Stanford then tied the duel up 2-2 after winning at the No. 5 spot.
The match came down to the 3’s pair. After dropping the first set, Quinn Perry and Ashleigh Adams responded by winning the second set to force a deciding third. However, in the third it was Stanford’s pair coming out on top 15-10 to win it for the Cardinal.
Cal Poly will finish the regular season Saturday with two more matches at Stanford. The Mustangs will take on Pepperdine at 9 a.m. before closing with No. 7 Cal at 11 a.
