CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a walk-off 3-2 victory over Cal Poly in the finale of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon inside Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The triumph by the No. 7 Beavers (28-7) completed a sweep of the weekend set, with all three games affected by rain. With nine losses in its last 13 games, Cal Poly fell to 18-16.
Cal Poly overcame an early 1-0 deficit with solo home runs by Dylan Kordic in the fifth inning and Nate Castellon in the sixth. It was the second home run of the year for both players.
Nick Bonn relieved Mustang starter Corden Pettey in the sixth inning and held Oregon State from scoring for three frames.
Then AJ Singer led off with a single to left field. After a line drive out to left field, Paul Vazquez drew a walk. Brady Estes was summoned from the bullpen and Ethan Galloway doubled into the right-field corner to score Singer with the tying run.
Estes secured a strikeout for the second out before Easton Talt lined an 0-1 pitch into right field just past a diving Kordic for a single, knocking in the winning run.
Cal Poly, which had a hit in each of the first six innings, loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and had runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but strikeouts ended both threats.
The Mustangs also almost had three runners on base in the ninth. Kordic led off with a single but was thrown out trying to advance to second on a pitch in the dirt. Dante Vachini thought he drew a one-out walk, but the umpires conferred, reviewed the sequence of pitches and discovered the count was 3-2. Vachini returned to the plate and struck out on the next pitch. Braxton Thomas followed with a single to left, but a strikeout ended the inning.
For the second straight game, Cal Poly amassed 11 hits and outhit Oregon State 11-6.
Third baseman Alejandro Garza produced his third multiple-hit game of the series with a double and two singles. The junior was 8-for-13 in the series, has a team-leading 17 multiple-hit games this season, including five in his last six contests and 10 in 15 games. In those 15 contests, Garza has elevated his batting average 90 points to .359.
Castellon, Kordic and Thomas each added a pair of hits Sunday and second baseman Antonio Castro extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double. Castellon was 4-for-13 in the series and Castro 3-for-11.
Singer and Adam Haight both had two hits for Oregon State.
Bonn (0-3) suffered the loss while the win went to Albert Roblez (1-0) as he secured the final four outs before Oregon State's game-winning rally in the ninth.
Rain, which forced a one-hour, 45-minute delay Friday and fell in the final five innings Saturday, including a 40-minute delay, affected Sunday's game from the fifth through seventh innings but the game was never suspended.
Cal Poly hosts Pepperdine for a 5:05 p.m. midweek game Tuesday at Baggett Stadium before heading back out on the road for a Big West series Friday through Sunday at first-place UC San Diego.
The Tritons are 11-4 in conference games after dropping two of three games at UC Santa Barbara over the weekend. Cal Poly and the Gauchos share second place with 10-5 Big West marks while Cal State Fullerton is fourth at 11-7 and plays three non-conference games at Oregon State next weekend.
