CORVALLIS, Ore. — An RBI single and two home runs in the middle innings erased an early Cal Poly lead as No. 7 Oregon State earned a come-from-behind 6-3 victory in the opener of a non-conference weekend baseball series Friday night inside Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The visiting Mustangs scored twice in the opening frame against one of the top pitchers in the nation and the host Beavers answered with a run of their own in the second inning before the game was halted due to lightning in the area.
One hour and 45 minutes later, play resumed and Oregon State (26-7) tied the game in the fifth on AJ Singer's run-scoring single to center field. An inning later, Easton Talt snapped the deadlock with a two-run home run to right and Bryce Hubbard followed with a solo blast to right-center field.
It was Talt's third homer of the year and the eighth for Hubbard.
Cal Poly batters, meanwhile, combined to strike out 14 times against Dax Whitney and three relievers. Neither starting pitcher returned to the mound after the long weather delay.
As a team this season, the Oregon State pitching staff is striking out opposing hitters at a rate of 12.86 per nine innings, second in the country. Whitney, who led the nation with 88 strikeouts in eight starts, struck out a pair of Mustangs over two innings Friday while winning pitcher Trey Morris (2-0) fanned eight in 4 2/3 frames, Wyatt Queen and Albert Roblez each struck out two with Roblez earning his nation-leading 11th save.
The loss was charged to Mustang freshman southpaw Brady Estes (3-1), who relieved starter Griffin Naess in the third inning and gave up three runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly jumped on Whitney in the first inning. Nate Castellon and Alejandro Garza both singled to open the game. Castellon scored on a wild pitch and Garza came home on a single through the left side of the Oregon State infield by Casey Murray Jr.
After Oregon State turned the game around with single runs in the second and fifth innings and three more in the sixth, Cal Poly second baseman Antonio Castro smashed his second home run of the year over the left-center field wall in the seventh to trim the deficit to 6-4.
Queen and Roblez, however, retired the final seven Mustang batters in a row to prevent any further comeback by Cal Poly.
Castellon and Garza both collected a pair of singles for Cal Poly. Garza produced his fourth multiple-hit game in his last five starts, leads the Mustangs with 15 multiple-hit contests this season and has raised his batting average 71 points to .340 over his last 13 games.
Hubbard finished with three hits while Talt, Singer and Bryson Glassco all contributed a pair of hits as Oregon State outhit Cal Poly 11-7.
The second game of the series will be played Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (a change from 4:35 p.m. due to incoming wet weather). Cal Poly will send redshirt junior right-hander Carson Turnquist (2-1, 3.62 ERA) to the mound to face Oregon State junior southpaw Ethan Kleinschmit (5-2, 3.38 ERA).
Sunday's series finale is set for a 1:05 p.m. start.
