SAN LUIS OBSPO, Calif. — Cal Poly junior third baseman Alejandro Garza has been named the Big West Preseason Player of the Year by D1baseball.com.
In each of his first two seasons, Garza has been a First Team All-Big West honoree. Last season, he led the Big West in hits and hit .351 with 16 doubles, six home runs, and 54 RBIs. He was the ninth toughest batter in the nation to strike out and was 13th in the nation in hits.
Garza was a key catalyst in helping the Mustangs win the Big West Championship and make a run to an NCAA Regional Final appearance. Throughout the course of the 2025 season, Garza had 32 multi-hit games and had a 20-game hitting streak at one point.
He hit .412 with runners in scoring position and was named the team’s Ozzie Smith MVP award winner. Garza also had a strong summer competing in the Cape Cod League for the Orleans Firebirds, hitting .298 against some of the best collegiate pitchers in the country.
Garza and the rest of the Mustangs open the 2026 season next Friday, Feb. 13 on the road in North Carolina against Campbell for a three-game series.
