SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior Hamad Mousa finished with a game high 20 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Jess Esso Essis added 17 points Friday morning, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program – playing its lone exhibition tuneup ahead of the 2026-27 regular season – fell against Westmont inside Mott Athletics Center, 105-93.
Junior Cayden Ward added 14 points for Cal Poly, which trailed Westmont, 34-28, with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half before utilizing a Mousa three-point play and back-to-back layups from newcomer Anthony Moore to take a one-point lead.
The Warriors, however, scored on their next three possessions to erase Cal Poly’s last lead and took a 57-46 advantage into the break.
Cal Poly shaved its deficit to 68-62 with 14 minutes to play before Westmont delivered a 9-0 run and maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the afternoon.
Shooting 51.5 (34-for-66) percent, Westmont turned 14 Cal Poly turnovers into 20 points.
Cal Poly opens the 2026-27 regular season on Monday, Nov. 2, hosting Division II Cal State San Marcos at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
