WEEKLY SNEAK PEEK
Football takes on ranked Utah Utes after season-opening win over San Diego
- The Mustangs opened the 2025 season with a dominant 41-17 win over San Diego. New quarterback Ty Dieffenbach was 18-27 for 263 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also ran for 69 yards and a touchdown, a 43-yard touchdown run. Wide receiver Michael Briscoe led the way with seven receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Mikey D'Amato was all over the place, recording a team-leading 16 tackles.
- For his impressive season-opening performance, Dieffenbach was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week. He's the first Mustang to receiver a Big Sky weekly honor since Elijah Ponder in 2023.
- The Mustangs now turn the page to face their lone FBS opponent of the season in No. 25 Utah Saturday on the road. The Utes, who compete in the Big 12, are coming off a decisive 43-10 road win over UCLA this past Saturday. Saturday's game against No. 25 Utah will kickoff at 3 p.m. PT and will air on ESPN+.
Women's Soccer looks to stay unbeaten at SJSU and against Cal in Spanos Stadium
- The Mustangs (1-0-5) are fresh off securing their first victory of the season this past Sunday at UNLV, earning a 1-0 triumph over the Rebels thanks to a goal from graduate student Madelyn Dougherty in the 17th minute. Cal Poly is currently on its third longest unbeaten streak to open a season in program history and its longest since starting the 2005 season 6-0-3.
- Making her first career start and appearance, redshirt freshman Shannon Porubski made five saves in the match to secure her first career clean sheet. The Rocklin, Calif. native earned Big West Freshman of the Week honors for her performance.
- Senior forward Jessie Halladay has set the tone so far for the Mustangs, tallying three goals and two assists across four matches this season. She currently leads the Big West in points per game, averaging two per match. Madelyn Dougherty is second on the team in points this season with five and tallied one goal and two assists over Cal Poly’s two matches this past week. Her three assists this season are currently the most in the Big West.
- Still unbeaten on the season, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team looks to continue its early season success this week, traveling to San Jose State on Thursday and playing host to Cal on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. Sunday’s home match will serve as the first of three AYSO Appreciation days. Kids 13-and-under get free admission to the match as part of Sunday Funday. Tickets to the match can be purchased HERE.
Volleyball continues road stint with trip to Fayetteville for Wooo Pig Invitational
- Cal Poly Volleyball takes on one more road tourney before coming home for a pair of hosted tournaments in Mott Athletics Center in mid-September. This weekend, the Mustangs are in Fayetteville to take on hosts Arkansas (Sept. 5, 5 p.m. PT), book-ended by neutral-site battles against Tulsa (Sept. 4, 5 p.m. PT) and Oklahoma (Seot. 6, 10 a.m. PT).
- The Mustangs (2-1) are coming off a successful weekend in Minnesota where they took a first-set victory off the ranked Golden Gophers before sweeping St. Thomas and pulling off the comeback reverse sweep over Ball State. Kendall Beshear highlighted a unexpectedly high-flying offense with a team-leading 41 kills, including a career-high (20) against Ball State during one of her two double-doubles.
- Arkansas was ranked no. 19 last season when the Razorbacks faced Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, taking that match 3-1 despite a first-set win from the Mustangs. Now, the Green and Gold will be looking to avenge that loss with a win over Arkansas on their own home court.
- Saturday's match against Oklahoma will mark the only time this season that Cal Poly will face back-to-back Power-4 opponents, similar to last season's tournament in Alabama when the Mustangs took on Auburn and Florida State.
Men's Soccer to play pair of matches in Colorado against Air Force and Denver
- Cal Poly men’s soccer closes a season-opening, four-match road trip when visiting Air Force on Friday, Sept. 5 (6 p.m. PT) and 2024 College Cup semifinalist Denver on Monday, Sept. 8 (5 p.m.).
- Seeking its first victory of 2025, Cal Poly opened the year with 2-0 setbacks at San Jose State (Aug. 21) and California Baptist (Aug. 30). During the loss at California Baptist, senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up five second-half saves.
- Following Monday’s matchup at Denver, Cal Poly returns home to Mustang Memorial Field to host San Francisco on Thursday, Sept. 11. The Mustangs take a nine-match home unbeaten run dating to 2023 into the game.
