SAN LUIS OBISPO – With a program record four Mustangs selected to the Big West Preseason Coaches’ Team, the Cal Poly men’s soccer program was tipped for a second-place finish Thursday in the annual coaches’ poll.
Defending Big West regular season champions, Cal Poly – in one of the tightest preseason poll results in Big West history – earned 71 total points to finish just two votes behind UC Santa Barbara. The Mustangs, meanwhile, edged UC Davis for second by just two votes.
Both Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara earned three first-place votes while UC Davis – which captured last year’s Big West Championship postseason title – grabbed four first-place votes. Cal Poly’s second-place showing matched its previous best placement in a Big West preseason poll.
Further down the poll, UC Irvine (57) finished fourth, followed by Cal State Fullerton (45), Cal State Bakersfield (37), CSUN (31), UC Riverside (24), UC San Diego (22) and Sacramento State (21).
Individually, Cal Poly procured four of the 11 player spots on the Big West Preseason Coaches’ Team with senior Nicky McCune (2024 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year) joining junior Parker Owens (Defender of the Year), sophomore Quinn Mahoney (Freshman of the Year) and junior midfielder Diego Guerra (All-Big West first team).
Cal Poly, which welcomes back all five All-Big West selections from last fall along with nine starters, 18 letterwinners and 79 percent of its 2024 goal production, began preparations for the 2025 regular season with a 5-0 exhibition victory at Pacific (Aug. 10).
The Mustangs visit No. 13 Stanford on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. for their final exhibition tuneup with ESPN+ coverage and live stats available HERE.
